NP Rank:
New Doctor Who to be announced
The BBC will announce who the new Doctor Who will be after the current Doctor gives up the roll.
Scottish actor David Tennant will record another four special episodes in 2009.
His replacement - the eleventh Doctor of the TV series - will be revealed in a Doctor Who special programme on British TV on 3 January.
The name of the actor who will replace David Tennant in Doctor Who will be announced on Saturday.
Tennant said in October that he would stand down from the show after filming four special episodes in 2009.
His replacement - the eleventh Doctor of the TV series - will be revealed in a Doctor Who Confidential programme on BBC One at 1735 on 3 January.
The casting was confirmed over Christmas and filming for the 2010 series begins in the summer.
Tennant is due to begin shooting the first of his four specials this month, just weeks after surgery on his back.

The new Doctor Who -- it's going to be quite the controversial announcement!

Why do you say that? Do you know who it is?
I think it will be a female this time around though.

Mudricky - are you of the school of thought that thinks it will be Billie Piper? I have seen that rumoured though would doubt it given she has recently had a baby. Jennifer Saunders was another name thrown into the ring.
Either way, David Tennant will be a hard act to follow.

Jennifer Saunders is hilarious, but I don't think she'll make a great Doctor Who. I personally think they won't pick a woman, although that would be really cool!

I wasn't thinking Billie Piper but now you do have me thinking!
I think it should stay a man but I suppose we would get used to the first female timelord, or would that be time'lady' =:-o
I wasn't keen on David Tennent at first but I feel he's been the best one so far.

One of the frontrunners, according to this article, is Paterson Joseph, who - if confirmed - would be the first black Doctor Who. I recall him from the Channel 4 series Peep Show in which he plays the megalomaniacal boss Johnson. He has fantastic comic timing - which is admittedly quite important for this role - though never having seen him in a drama am not sure what he'd be like as the Time Lord. Is anyone else familiar with his work?

Paterson Joseph was amazing in Jekyll as a megalomaniac (hmm, again?) American. I also wouldn't mind seeing James Nesbitt in the role, as he did a great job in the same series too.
