Artist M.I.A Has Released a New Video for Her Song Born Free Directed by Romain Gavras

M.I.A's new video for her song Born Free and the video directed by Romain Gavras contains violence and full-frontal nudity so it is not considered safe for work or for young children.

Break Down of the Born Free Video

The video begins with U.S soldiers in riot gear getting in to vans and driving down fairly deserted streets while a sound like an air-raid siren plays in the background. A group of them run in to a building, and when a woman gets in their way one of them hits her and continues to hit her while she is on the floor.

Then the police continue in to another building where an old man is smoking and two people are having sex. The police break down the door and separate the couple, like they are looking for something.

A few police officers then throw a gas bomb into an apartment and then close the door so that gas fills up the home. When they enter they beat up a man who lives here, hitting him repeatedly.

The video then cuts to a shot of another police officer watching the violence through an apartment window from outside.

The savage beatings continue and then in one apartment, an officer finds a redheaded young male and they escort him in to the waiting van outside where you then see other redheaded people who have also been caught. All of them appear to be male.

The vans then continue to drive and they pass a sign saying 'our day will come' with redheaded soldiers in army fatigues holding guns in triumph above their heads. A gang of redheaded youths are lying in wait for the vans and they throws rocks as they drive past but the vans do not stop.

The vans arrive at some kind of camp out in the desert where armed guards with dogs are waiting and all the prisoners are told to get off the bus.

They are all shoved off the bus and then walk a little way before one group is shown on their knees with their hands on their head. The other group are then told to run to the field beyond and when they do not move, the smallest boy is shot in the head (this part is particularly disturbing and graphic).

The group then starts to run and the boy who was brought out of the apartment building earlier in the video tries to make a run for it.

Fire bombs start going off around the boys as they are running, killing them. The boy who tried to make a run for it falls over and the two policemen chasing him catch up and start beating him. We can assume he is beaten to death.

One boy is shown getting blown to pieces and a hand comes flying out of the explosion (also very disturbing and graphic).

The video ends with a guard looking off in to the distance.

It is uncertain what message M.I.A is trying to send; whether it is about the genocide in Sri Lanka or about the state of segregation in the United States, YouTube has decided it is too graphic for their United States site and pulled it.

M.I.A was unhappy with that and she tweeted:

FUCK UMG WHO WONT SHOW IT ON YOUTUBE! FOR THE U.S

She later tweeted that it was not UMG's fault.

Watch the video below but it is graphic and is NSFW or young children.

Amy, hang on, can you please do some fact checking before saying things like "genocide in Sri Lanka". Leading analysts agree that it is a myth and just Tiger propaganda. Just read this article from a leading think tank in Canada that specialises in conflict analysis.www.mackenzieinstitute.com/2009/genocide-talk020609.htmSeriously comments like this hurt Sri Lanka. MIA talks a lot of crap. So please don't parrot what she says. Thank you.

@James Randall Even the former Army commander Sarath Fonseka accepted the war crimes.  (He is behind bars for this mistake). After arranging for people to surrender holding white flags (with UN involvement) the Sril Lankan army, allegedly under instructions from the President's brother Gotabaya, shot them all dead. Haven’ you seen the UK Channel 4 video, now verified by the UN as true, showing Tamils stripped naked and shot at point blank range by Sri Lankan soldiers, in a manner more horrific than this clip? Why is Sri Lanka fighting tooth and nail to keep away UN from investigating war crimes? Please don’t try to hoodwink gullible people.

If I didn't have some close friends in Sri Lanka, I might have fallen for your claim that it didn't happen, quoting the same experts who get PAID to tell you that ALL the genocide we do around the world is a lie. But I know what happened to some of my nearest and dearest over there, so my information is what actually happened, not the agenda-propaganda driven coverups lies yours is. This video is an important message for Americans who still don't get who their real enemies are or what profiling leads to.... you don't want to live through it, yet you support the same ones who are causing these things to happen. This is what your hard-right religious posers will bring a nation when they are allowed to dictate law and policy. It is UNAMERICAN to act the same way fascist terrorists act (If it walks like a duck.....) So, when we see it start to surface you have only two choices. Either nip it in the bud or  let it take over your country.  Profiling is how tyrants keep a lid on their people and remove the ones who do understand what is happening. That's why they like to kill the intellectuals off first.. they get rid of 'dissident elements' because they  know too much to be fooled. They know how and why to resist and they can explain it to others... so kill them now! You are missing what MIA is telling you about our good old used-to-be-free USA. I love my country, but I don't have to love them wasting our tax monies and floating mega-loans we will be stuck paying- for unwinnable wars of aggression in lands that do not want us over there killing their people instead of taking care of our crumbling infrastructure and our vital domestic needs.

The overall point is obvious to many of you. She's imagining a world where redhead North Americans assume the roles of Palestinians/Iraqis/Afghans. Kind of like District 9, only more ballsy. But most of you don't get the significance of the redheads.M.I.A is from the UK.And in the UK, redheads are the targets of ridicule and derision. Here's a clip from Wikipedia that should explain it:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_hair#Beliefs_about_temperamentIn modern-day UK, the words "ginger" or "ginga" are sometimes derogatorily used to describe red-headed people. Some have speculated that the dislike of red-hair may derive from the historical English sentiment that people of Irish or Celtic background, with a greater prevalence of red hair, were ethnically inferior.

MIA isn't the first to use redheads. Robin williams in what dreams may come.

as a filmaker, i am more disturbed over the fact that the credits were missing than the depiction of violence. there are more disturbing images from real news than what is fictionally portrayed here. hyperbole unfairly labels films as one thing, when quite possibly it was meant as a form of entertainment, hence the prevalence of violent content on public broadcast daily in the united states. i tend to focus more on certain technical glitches which the laymen will never catch, versus the emotional impact of the content. i say bravo for reaching into some's personal darkness and ripping out their demons. that is the beauty of this medium.

Clearly it portrays what we all are thinking...  Redheads suck really bad

I guess this video does little except point out the true cowardice of the directer and performer, since clearly the point was to indicate (with the use of red-heads, visible differences) the pitfalls of 'profiling'.  However, it is FAR MORE LIKELY that the Islamic Fundamentalists (think Taliban), if they can gain control of the world--as they seem to be positioning themselves to do (think Iran)--would in fact actually round up all the red-headed Catholics in Ireland.  But I notice these cowards did not want to address this very real danger directly (think Comedy Central's reaction to the episode of South Park) because MIA and her ilk FEAR retaliation from Islamic radicals, so they employ surrogates to get their message out.  Of course, that way, MIA can always leave it up to the Viewers to interpret what she is saying for themselves, which naturally only proves what a true coward she is.

How would Iran ever take control of the world in any of our lifetimes you fucking moron. Stop believing all the fear mongering bullshit you read that's designed to cause division and keep people fighting with each other. Also, just because someone doesn't believe the prejudiced rubbish you do doesn't make them a coward. Less of a cunt, but not a coward.

What kind of shit is this? How can you call this a music video?

What's wrong with you people? She's trying to warn you that we are beginning to become aware of a growing fascism in the US of A!!   First of all, there used to be a pristine copy on Youtube which they took down yesterday, so you are not seeing or hearing it as it was made. This is a lousy edited copy.  I was lucky to see it before they removed it or I might have panned it too. BTW.. it was removed by Youtube via HLS, the shadow government we now have spying on us in direct violation of the constitution... which is also a BIG warning sign of a military takeover manouver in action.

Well done MIA for a thought provoking video with it's different interpretations. Be it mass genocide around the globe (Rwanda, Sri Lanka); the dangers we face when we let our governments take away our democracy and replace it with dictatorship; and the use of redheads as the victims was genius.  Only now after this video has been released, I am shocked to learn at the extent of physical and mental abuse redheads receive here in the UK.  One theory for this discrimination is maybe the historical backround between the english and it's celtic neighbours.  It certainly has gotten people talking about this unseen hate crime, and by banning it even more people will now view it to see what all the fuss is about.

Ummm....has anyone pointed out taht the song is kind of crap?Maybe the video is simply designed to distract and market a song which is fundamentally boring as hell. This is fart not art

Gaurav, you and me are on the same wavelength. What a rubbish song, and the video is such a cliche" shock em and they'll think it's radical and gutsy". Yawn.... I thought M. I .A had something original to say, apparently no, and as my daughter said " the news is more shocking"

MIA just wants attention because she knows she's falling from the spotlight. This is another feudal attempt to keep her place in the pop world by being "edgy". In my opinion, the song sucks and the video just makes me mad just like the holocaust made me mad when I learned about it in the 5th grade. Except the holocaust actually happened. This is just fiction and honestly a waste of time.

umm BWH - speaking of Grade 5 - the word you are looking for is "futile".

absolutely dumb! couldn't hear the music. and you're right. she isn't trying to make a statement! she's a one hit wonder (paperplanes) and this is her way of getting attention in some way or another.

does nobody think that was more like northern ireland than sri lanka with the murals and gingers and such... i suppose it would be a fairly extreme misrepresentation of the troubles

M.I.A was just aiming for the shock value. the song was shite. this was just effing creepy and i still dont even know what point she was trying to get across..

I'm 17, so I've grown up with the "gingers are inferior" rumour, and It's un-true. People with red-hair, at least in my experiences, do get laughed at, but in the same fashion as everyone does.

I actually enjoyed this song better than paper planes. I think creating fear in the masses is a terrible way to get a message across, but it is effective. It annoys me that so many people leave paragraph long complaints of society, media, news, war, etc on websites that are likely to be stumbled upon only by a few. What a waste of energy! Go tell it to the world by a way that will be heard. You make me tired otherwise.
