Real Steel: Hugh Jackman Teaches Giant Robots to Box

The second trailer for Real Steel hit the web, and I stand by my impression of the film after seeing the first trailer: this is a film version of Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots.

Hugh Jackman plays a human boxer just trying to get by in a robot-boxer world, and who is just getting to know the son he abandoned... as they build an ass-kick-bot to kick other robot's asses.

Okay, so Real Steel is based on "Steel", a 1956 short story by Richard Matheson (who also wrote I Am Legend), but come on: the robot built by Hugh Jackman's character and his son totally looks like the Blue Bomber.

The film looks like Rocky meets I, Robot meets... well, Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots. It's like if a Cylon had to go through The Ultimate Fighter. No matter how bad (or maybe even good) this turns out to be, just remember... a movie based on Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots got green-lit, made, distributed, and shown. That's gotta count for something.

Don't get me wrong: I want to like Real Steel. Hell, it's got robots punching each other in the face! It's as if Real Steel was made specifically with me in mind. It's just that... I don't have a good feeling about this. We'll see.

Oh, and before you even ask, yes, someone has done Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots IRL... for Burning Man, naturally.
