Noroz which is also pronouced as NOWROZ is the day when a new year is started in Afghanistan as well as Iran. In persian language it is also called "sal-e-now" which mean new year. on this day all over Afghanistan and Iran special ceremonies are arranges and people gathered to celebrates the new year with cultural zeal.In this day a special sweet dish is prapared by Afghans people called "Haft Meewa" (Seven Fruits) and offered to guest and family members.

The history of nowroz goes hundred of years back in old iran called persia.

In Iran Nowroz marks the first day of new year and spring . According to Encyclopædia Britannica, the Jewish fastival of Purim is also adopted from the persian new year.

This year in Afghanistan nowroz is observed with more enthusiasm. a Special and grand ceremony in Afganistan is held on the Tomb of "Sakhe Saib" in Mazar-e-Sharif where thousand of Afghans are gathered to start a New year. in Mazar-e-Sharif a flag-hoisting ceremony is arranged and thousands of people from Afghanistan ,Government officials as well as foreign countries officials participate in the flag-hoisting ceremony. This year a great flat-hoisting was arranged in the Tomb "Maza-e-Sharif" which is also believed the Shrine of Hazrat Ali sahib ,The son in-law of Great Prophet Hazrat Muhammad Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) and the fourth Calipah of Islam. All Afghan people pay tribute and more respect to this tomb but specially the northern people of Afghanistan do more respect and pay more tribute to this shrine.

During the ragime of Taliban there was ban on the nowroz celebrations as they termed it unislamic but in the present ragime every year the fastival of nowroz is being observed every year.

Thanks shinwari,

It appears that Purim possibly evolved from the "Nowroz" holiday  But that is another amazing story. For another time.

I just wanted to point out something that the report missed out about the contradiction about the actual resting place of Ali who is mostly believed to be buried in Najaf (south west Iraq) he was buried by his two sons secretly to keep the grave hidden from the enemies who later adopted the Wahabi faith.  The tomb was built during 7th century under the order of Abbasid king when he discovered the grave by chance during his deer hunting in the area. The Place is now famously known as Imam Ali Mosque.

But another legend states that during 12th century an Islamic Cleric saw in dream that Hazrat Ai was in fact buried near Balkh in Afghanistan. The Saljuk king of that time erected a tomb at that place and it famously became blue Mosque of Mazar e Sharif (tomb of exalted)

why the ambiguity and secrecy?
Throughout Islamic history, the Arabian tribes and families who lost the political power due to emergence of Islam, never ceased their hostilities and animosities towards Muhammad’s family and Hashmi tribe, although after loosing Mecca to the Islamic forces they reluctantly accepted Islam but that didn’t stop them from conspiring and openly fighting the Prophets family soon after the death of Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Umyyiads regained their power through conspiracy, murder and their wealth. and thus managed to assasinate Ali while he was praying. Before dying he asked his sons to keep his grave a secret in order to keep it from getting desecrated and used as a propoganda by Umyaads.
