New Year's celebrations are already taking place around the world: it's 2:30am on January 1, 2010 Sydney time as I type this. In terms of major cities, Tokyo, Sydney, Melbourne, and Auckland are "forward in time", and so celebrate New Year's earlier than we North Americans (But not as early as those on Kiribati)

Some of my friends exuberantly texted me already, time zones be damned (they're 19 hours ahead at the moment). The MMS messages show warm summer nights and crowds of celebrants. For those of us just starting work on this side of the International Date Line, we still have all day to get organized for whatever party or family tradition we'll be taking part in tonight.

Some people are into watching fireworks, hitting the bars, or going to house parties, while others prefer a candlelit dinner or an evening in with the kids.

See when 2010 starts around the world.
