The Black Caps were successful in restricting the English side for 258 in the first game, considering the visitors were at 184-2 in the 39th over. Kane Williamson powered the Kiwis' chase by scoring 74 and was aided by Brendon McCullum (69 not out) down the order. The latter played a captain's knock at the dying stages as New Zealand won the game with seven balls to spare.

Mitchell McClenaghan, who dismissed England skipper Alastair Cook and Jos Buttler, was the standout performer amongst New Zealand bowlers, ending the match with the figures of 4-56. However, the left-arm pacer has been ruled out for the rest of the series due to a side strain.

Cook and his men now face the challenge of adjusting to the conditions in New Zealand as another defeat will lead to a series defeat. Ian Bell (64), Jonathan Trott (68) and Joe Root (56) were the only players, who managed to get a good score for the visitors.

The English bowlers started the second innings of the game on a brighter note, after pacer James Anderson sent back Kiwi Opener BJ Watling in the first over. The visitors were in a comfortable position till the 38th over, where Steven Finn dismissed James Franklin, reducing the hosts to 155-5. However, the brilliant knock from McCullum down the order dashed England's hopes and guided New Zealand to victory.
