New Zealand are in the field under overcast skies after winning the toss on Wednesday. The forecast was for brisk winds and cool temperatures throughout Thursday but no rain.
The Black Caps are hoping the greener conditions play into their hands.
Debutant Bruce Martin, whose left-arm spin may be of more use in the second innings, said Black Caps seamers Tim Southee, Trent Boult and Neil Wagner were rubbing their hands at the prospect.
"Hopefully we can put them right under pressure in that first sort of hour and a half and rip into that middle order."
England will be without Graeme Swann for the series after the classy offspinner was ruled out with an elbow injury which requires surgery.
Martin was disappointed he won't get to lock horns in a spinning duel with the 33-year-old - one year his senior - but was delighted to see left-arm veteran Monty Panesar will fill the breach for England.
"They're not lacking a hell of a lot with Monty. I like the way he goes about his cricket, he's a fun guy to watch."
