Niall Ferguson asks - What was it about the civilization of Western Europe that allowed it to trump the outwardly superior empires of the Orient? Niall's answer is that the West developed six “killer applications” that the Rest lacked: competition, science, property, democracy, medicine, consumerism and work ethic. The key question today is whether or not the West has lost its monopoly on these six things. If so, Mr. Ferguson warns, we may be living through the end of Western ascendancy.


How about, Niall, that the "west" figured out how to squander the world's resources, make regions of it uninhabitable, condemn the majority of its inhabitants to a life of misery and impoverishment, while following those six killer apps that kept other "non-west" peoples from continuing their sustainable cultures?
