From a No Man's Land To Fragile Peace: Building Democracy In The Balkans

Canadians working in the Balkans agree on
one thing: democracies aren't built overnight. But they are willing to
take on the challenge.

Working
within broader international organizations, they are building the
foundations of necessities taken for granted in Canada: peace,
stability, accessible health care, democratic institutions and
education systems in young countries that have recently experienced war
and that are going through economic, political and socio-cultural
changes.

These Canadians are realistic, experienced, open-minded and
culturally aware. The locals with whom they work value their skills and
flexibility.

During the three months I stayed in the Balkans, I interviewed about
50 Canadians and locals working for military, health, democratization
and judicial reform projects funded by Canada in the former Yugoslavia.
