No Sandcastles! It's the Law

No Public Kissing, No Reading, a curfew at night. Sounds more like Nazi Germany in the 30's and 40's than Italy in 2008.

ROME (Reuters) - When in Capri, don't wander off the beach in a bikini. If you go to the sea in Eraclea, near Venice, remember that building sandcastles is forbidden. And don't even think about mowing your lawn at the weekend in Forte dei Marmi.

Emboldened by a nationwide crackdown on crime and a government decree giving them extra law-and-order powers, Italian mayors have issued a string of often bizarre by-laws to enhance "public decorum".

Public displays of affection in a car can earn you a fine of up to $745 in Eboli, feeding pigeons is off-limits in the centre of Lucca while in Novara groups of more than two people are forbidden from lounging around in parks at night.

Italian newspapers have dubbed this year's holiday season "the summer of bans". But this week one town hall was forced to acknowledge things may have gone too far.

Rodrigo Piccoli, 33, called national radio to protest after he was fined 50 euros for lying down in a park in the northern city of Vicenza to read a book. The mayor has since promised to drop the ban.

Having been painted by more than enough birds in my life, I say they keep the no feeding the pidgeons one on the books and enforced !

Can anyone explain why building sand castles is not permitted?  This just seems so ridiculous... it's not a safety issue.  Someone really doesn't like sand castles?  How sad.

I added a photo of an amazing castle here in California for this story.  Hope it helps!

I adore Italy.
The thing I love most about it is easy balance between the devil-may-care and the fiendishly intellectual: Anita Ekberg in the fountain; Luigi Serafini; La Cicciolina; Umberto Eco; Pavarotti eating pasta between acts; Luciano Berio; Rafaella Cara...
The country is plain mad, but in the best possible way.

It is, therefore, very saddening for me to see that it has become like the UK; bogged down by petty officialdom imposing petty rules to please their petty minds, to fret over things that normal people wouldn't bat an eyelid over. The ban on building innocent - and eminently temporary - sandcastles is even more ridiculous than the worst that the UK could come up with.

Defy these rules NOW.
Don't let Berlusconi's henchmen get away with this.
Build your sandcastles, kiss in public, lie down to read your books and assert proudly, above all, the vigorous Italian belief in the essentiality of "La Dolce Vita".

2008 U.S. Imperial Beach Sandcastle Competition

This event draws several thousand people to Imperial Beach, California each year to admire the USA's largest sandcastle building competition. Organizers make sure to schedule the event during low tide. Throngs of spectators move in a massive line from sandcastle to sandcastle, stopping to admire and take photos. Many people stand along Imperial Beach Pier to get a better view of the activities. Also at the competition were musical bands, food and vendors. Read more about the U. S. Open Sandcastle Competition

Over 1700 children from all over the North East of England enjoyed a day at the seaside working with architects/designers/engineers/construction professioanls to build designs in the sand. Winning schools won £200 for their school and this event along with the Sandcastle Ball raised over £19500 for Children North East, the oldest children's charity in the North East of England (www.children-ne.org).
