I think we all know the importance of improving the standard of English in Malaysia. There are many ways the schools and parents can help pupils and students do that. Teaching Maths and Science subjects in English would be a great first move in that direction though it is still not enough but it is definitely needed.
If the government is to revert back to teaching the subjects in their mother tongues, this I believe is a step backwards in our education system and in our attempt to improve English. People will always resist change even though that change may be necessary. To master any language, that language must be used in as many aspects of our life as possible. If we just limit it to one English language intensive subject to try to improve, this is not enough though I strongly support such move.
When we look at our small neighbour Singapore, their secondary to tertiary education subjects and courses are mostly conducted in English and English is widely used in everyday life. That is why Singaporean's command of English is probably the best in South East Asia because it is used in many aspects of their daily life and yet all their races still use and speak their mother tongues and because of their good command of English, foreign investors invest in their country as communication is not a big problem. So if in Malaysia we are serious about improving our command of English and we scrap of what little we have in teaching Maths Science in English, this will be a sad sad day in our attempt to improve the standard of English of our younger generation.
I hope the government will continue with current policy which I feel is a good starter and move on with further attempts to improve if we are really serious about this whole thing as I believe reverting back to teaching in their mother tongues will worsen the progress.
