North Vancouver Civic Leaders Trash History
The City of North Vancouver has voted in favour of removing heritage designation on a number of historical shipyard buildings near Londsdale quay. This paves the way for their demolition, erasing the last of the historical ship building sites in North Vancouver.
After years of working around the buildings, which have been protected from demolition because of their heritage status, the City has reversed itself and decided the buildings can go. The reason is the lure of federal money to build a Maritime Centre on the North shore. The buildings were originally included in the City's pitch to the feds for money for the centre. But when their budget came up too high their answer was to vote 5-2 to wipe the buildings out of the plan. Doing so reduces their over-all budget because they don't have to spend money to preserve the buildings.
The federal funds are by no means a sure thing. However, removing the heritage designation does mean one sure thing - the buildings will be demolished.

Thanks bigsnit, good story. I sometimes visit the Lonsdale Quay in the summers and I've always loved those buildings. It's a shame they're going to go.
