NRI stands for Non-Resident Indians, the people that have either left India and living abroad or were born in another country but are of Indian origin i.e. their parents.

For marriage, NRI's are seen as a haven for women that are from India and they see the potential of a new life in a new environment. Arranged marriages are popular for this type of union of two people of the same background but living in different parts of the world.

However, the reality of these marriages has been highlighted in this article, demonstrating the abuse of such marriages where in many cases, the men and their families take advantage of the marital process to gain a large dowry. A dowry usually consists of money, goods, property etc. that is traditionally given to the male (and hid family in many cases) as part of the Indian marital ritual by the family of the woman who is to marry the man.

The twisted part of this tale is that as shown in the video of the article, that there are many women still waiting for their husbands to return to take them from India. Showing that some of these men are taking the dowry but never returning. Some are doing this intentionally from the start of the process whilst others simply lose contact with their wives and any children that are born after they left.

This is a practice that is being focused on now by the Indian authorities but what will be done is another matter, as the volume of such cases is not easy to manage.
