The Dark Knight is on it's way to become one of the most successful comic book adaptations. That being said...where does it stand and where could it go?

Adjusted for inflation the most successful comic book adaptation so far is 2002's Spider-Man. It's adjusted gross is $491 million domestically. In second place it's Tim Burton's Batman from 1989 with $445 million. The Dark Knight has grossed $314 million in 10 days, but won't show it's real power till it surpasses Batman's adjusted gross. In third it's the 2004 sequel, Spider-Man 2 with $425 million. In fourth it's the movie that started it all, 1978's Superman starring the late Christopher Reeve, with $406 million. In fifth it's 1997's Men In Black with $386 million.

The Dark Knight is in eighth under Spider-Man 3 and Iron Man, but that will change of course. It's only been 10 days. Let's see where the movie ends.

UPDATE:

While many in the media are already saying that The Dark Knight is the highest grossing comic book adaptation of all time with $410 million so far, that's actually not the case when adjusted for inflation. The movie is currently #4 under Spider-Man, Batman (1989), and Spider-Man 2.

UPDATE 2:

The Dark Knight is now the third highest grossing comic book adaptation when adjusted for inflation. It has grossed $441 million so far. It's $4 million away from 1989's Batman.

UPDATE 3:

The movie has now made $489 million dollars and should reach $500 million by Labor Day weekend. That would make the movie the highest grossing comic book adaptation both when adjusted for inflation and when not. Also, while the movie is currently #2 on the domestic list of top grossers it is #35 on the adjusted list and should reach ATLEAST #30 by Labor Day weekend.
