ODB FBI FIle: Ol' Dirty Bastard Docs Made Public
Ol' Dirty Bastard FBI File Online
Founding Wu-Tang Clan member Ol' Dirty Bastard (born Russell Tyrone Jones but also known as ODB, Dirt McGirt, Dirt Dog, Big Baby Jesus, BZA, and Peanut the Kidnapper, among others) was not only a famous rapper but was also on the FBI's most-wanted list.
Thanks to a Freedom of Information Act request by Gun.io user Rick Jones, Ol' Dirty Bastard's FBI file is now online, and you can read it below.
ODB was involved in several crimes, including theft, assault, and attempted murder; and was involved in a shootout with the NYPD.
In 1998, Ol' Dirty Bastard was arrested in Los Angeles for making terrorist threats outside the House of Blues; even before 9/11, that's the sort of thing that attracts FBI attention. That same year, he interrupted Shawn Colvin's Grammy acceptance speech to declare, "Wu-Tang is for the children". As was often the case, nobody had any idea what ODB was talking about, and he managed to pre-empt Kanye West by over a decade.
He escaped from court-ordered drug treatment in 2000 and lived as a fugitive, though he appeared onstage with the Wu Tang Clan (telling one audience, "I'm gonna live like a bird [...] eating seeds and shit") as well as signing autographs. Ol' Dirty Bastard was re-arrested a month later.
What's in ODB's FBI File?
The FBI was seriously concerned with the Wu-Tang. You may even say that the FBI thought that Wu-Tang ain't nothin' to fuck with. The feds were investigating the group as a full-fledged criminal organization with involvement in drug trafficking, carjacking, illegal weapons, and murder.
Hilariously, the names of the other members of the Wu-Tang Clan (GZA, RZA, Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, U-God, Masta Killa, and Inspectah Deck) are redacted, despite the fact that all of them are world-famous as Wu Tang members.
The FBI file also mentions the arrest of Sean "Puffy" Combs and J-Lo (his then-girlfriend) in 1999, following the Club New York shooting for which Shyne went to jail.
The ODB FBI file also alludes to a syndicate of robbers who targeted famous rappers, which may have been referenced in 50 Cent's 1999 track "How to Rob". The track mentions several Wu Tang members by name, though it also mentions virtually every rapper who was famous at the time.
Ol' Dirty Bastard died of an accidental drug overdose on November 13, 2004 at the Wu-Tang Clan's 36 Chambers studio in Midtown Manhattan. He was 35 years old.
