"The first thing that turned me on to folk singing was Odetta", Bob Dylan in 1978.
The wonderful Odetta passed last evening, we met her only once, she was very gracious. An influential folk musician from the 1950's to the present, she was active in the civil rights movement and was to perform at the upcoming inaugural. She was performing until a couple weeks ago. I will miss her rich voice.
NPR did a nice piece on Morning Edition and All Things Considered featuring interview excerpts, it will show up for streaming from the archive by Thursday. Locally one of our public TV station ran a recent performance of Odetta introduced by Morgan Freeman taped in a small club down south, the show is called Blues Divas taped in 2004.
