Oktoberfest, the world's largest fair best known for the massive amount of beer consumed, marks its 176th anniversary this year. Oktoberfest starts on September 19th in Munich, Germany. The festival is free to attend, and lasts for 16 days. Oktoberfest attracts around six million people each year, who each drinks one liter of beer on average. The record for most beer drunk at Oktoberfest was set in 2007 at 6.7 million liters over a period of fifteen days. This year, a Mass, which is a liter of beer, will cost around €8.5.

Six million people drinking in one city means drivers need to be alert. Just four days before this year's festival kicks off, a German court ruled that a motorcyclist who collided with a drunk festival-goer crossing the street at a red light was partly to blame for the accident, as she should have expected there to be drunks on the roads. She is sentenced to pay half of the damages, around €2,500. Authorities are recommending that people do not drive to the festival.
