Old one deserves a dignified Resurrection

Apparently, there are a number of old cinemas in Wales in need of a savior. If I were a cinema, especially the oldest one in Wales, I would want to be saved by someone as dignified as Terry Jones.

Monty Python star Terry Jones reopens Theatr Colwyn

Former Monty Python star Terry Jones is officially re-opening Theatr Colwyn in his home town Colwyn Bay, in Conwy.

The venue, which opened in 1886, is said to be Britain's oldest operating cinema, and recently underwent a £738,000 refurbishment.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail is being shown and Jones will be interviewed by comedian Phil Jupitus, before the audience ask questions.

Jones has said he has a "soft spot" for the theatre where his family performed.

He said: "Theatr Colwyn means a lot to me because my grandfather conducted the orchestra for the Colwyn Bay Operatic Society there and my mother and uncle both trod the boards on that very stage."

The venue has been operating since last month, but the official ribbon-cutting ceremony was reserved for the former Python.

The refurbishment, funded by the Welsh Government and Conwy council, included a new front entrance, disabled access, a ground floor bar, new offices and a community room.

Goronwy Edwards, Conwy council's cabinet member for communities, said: "This is a fantastic transformation of this unique building which is dearly loved and appreciated by so many in the area and beyond. Good luck and well done."

Sarah Ecob, general manager, said it was a "coup" to have Jones at the ceremony, who she described as "one of the most famous of all comedy writers and performers".”
