OMG Flickr is Turning 4!!! Let's Celebrate.
The folks at Flickr are hosting a party in San Francisco for the company's fourth birthday on March 15.
Since the vast majority of NowPublic contributors are Flickr users, and since most of us aren't lucky enough to live in San Francisco, we thought we'd put together an homage of our own.
Tell us how Flickr changed your life. Is there a particular Flickr community that raised you like its own? Has Flickr helped your photography career flourish? Did you meet a special someone by sharing the private portion of your photo collection?
While you're at it, submit some of your favourite photos. The combined photography talent at NowPublic should make for an awesome collection.
What to do:
1) Share your favourite Flickr memories and milestones in a comment below.
2) Show off your best photos and upload them to this story.
3) (Optional) Toast Flickr when you drink your next alcoholic beverage.

Rob Peters, I like this story. I personally enjoy the flickr group 'you know a redneck works in your office when...'
Apologies for the photo, I know it's a little boring...

Hey guys, we need photos and comments from everyone. It's a fabulous Flickr-fest.

OK, I just toasted Flickr... now I'll have to add some photos, huh?
I first heard of Flickr via a DIY blog posting, where a new dad entertained his tractor-obsessed toddler by queueing up a slideshow of every tractor image he could find. Pure geek-daddy gold.
(Like all expanding web entities, Flickr has its strengths and weaknesses- its feature set has grown tremendously, giving the world access to an unprecedented number of personal and locale-specific images; but so have instances of cliques, bullying, and flaming, and there is very little access to the human/development end: Yahoo! is a bit of a behemoth in that sense)

To celebrate "Flickr Turns 4" we're hosting an event for all the Maldives users on Flickr. And we appreciate all your presence. Meet up for a chit chat.. or grab a piece from our anniversary cake :).

Thanks for the invite. Here's the story of the photo:
I've visited this location a few times now. It's about 20m from where I shot #50. It has a slow stream of people and is good for backlit reflector shots. So far I've not really found the person I've been looking for. When I turned up today I spotted 5 paintings which must have been hung in the last week. This gave me a second reason for using the location and therefore widened the brief for who I wanted to model for me.
I missed out on 1 opportunity earlier in this visit. A very relaxed couple hovered by the paintings, unfortunately they were foreign and I lost the nerve to try and cross the language barrier. It kind of took be by suprise.
I'd all but given up and shot this shot candidly to cheer myself up when Gemma came along. I thought she had a kind face and hoped her scarf would look good against one of the paintings. Gemma's reaction was nice. She was very modest in her suprise.
I've gone back to simple portraits like this again in an effort to improve on the basics again. Where I failed with Valerie to get the pose I was after I managed more with Gemma. It's interesting how people naturally stand square on to a camera when a 45deg angle is more flattering.
I also tried a new tip to try and get a genuine smile. Simply asking "what makes you feel happy?", "Shopping!" came the reply. Whether this smile is a result of that question only Gemma would be able to tell you. It could equally be a "Who is this nutter?!" kind of smile ;-) Gemma, if you see this I'd love to know!
This is #56 in my 100 strangers assignment. More street portraits and strangers from around the world on the Photo challenge: 100 strangers web site!

Now that you've got your fancy schmancy vintage apron from over at www.RickRackAttack.com, what are you gonna do with it?
Wear it, of course! Wear it while you're cooking up some delicious food!
Over at http://anapronaday.blogspot.com, I've declared myself "World's Best Cook"! (Please contain your laughter.)
I love sharing recipes with you, but what I enjoy even more is sharing the pictures and stories that go along with the recipes.
Come on, isn’t it amusing to see pictures of Dad Barley in the seventies when he still had hair or to see a plant growing in our bidet? Of course it is! And… Flickr helps me to share my stories with these pictures.
Happy 4th birthday Flickr! So, put on your apron & let's make a birthday cake!

It was early in the morning and I noticed condensation on the window. I stepped outside to see what the tree looked like through the condensation, then went back in and grabbed my camera and tripod and fired off a few shots.

HAPPY 4TH BIRTHDAY FLICKR !!!
Thanks for the invite Rob!
Flickr has
helped me improve in being a better photographer and I have learnt many new editing techniques along the way from other Flickr members such as how to make HDR’s,
flood-filter photos, mosaics, selective colouring etc…I have
also met Flickr members from Greece at Flickr meetings held in Athens. They’re a
lovely group of people and a lot of fun to be with.
I created 2
Flickr groups a year ago:
http://flickr.com/groups/macrophotos_no_limits/
http://flickr.com/groups/flowerpictures_no_limits/
I
administer them all on my own which is very time consuming and yet so
rewarding!
It’s a big
responsibility for sure to administer thousands of members and trying to run 2
happy communties but from what they say I’m doing a pretty good job so far :-)
What has
Flickr given me?The chance to share my photos with the rest of the World and
to make new friends, not only pen-pals but real friends! The means to find out
new methods of improving my photographs. The chance to be able to see different
parts of the World on a daily basis, through other peoples’ photos….to learn so
many new things about the way of life in other countries and their customs and
to enrichen my limited knowledge on
flowers and strange animals and insects. It’s amazing how many knew things I
have learnt whilst viewing other peoples’ photos on Flickr!
Another
great thing is that a photo of mine is going to be published this month in a
book called Mediterrean Islands in England. Yoohoo!!!! Never in my wildest
dreams did I exepct something like that to happen. Photography is just a hobby
for me, something that gets the adrenaline pumping while I’m at it clicking
away :-)
HAPPY 4TH
BIRTHDAY FLICKR !!! I ♥ YOU !!!!!

Celebrating Flickr's 4th birthday makes sense to me....
Flickr has been an inspiration on a number of levels, but the most important aspect for me is the
opportunity to meet 'like - minded' individuals. Two years ago I started correspondence with another Flickr
member who turned out to live in the city where I used to live. When I visited the city, we met up for a drink
and got along famously. We later went cycling together, had a meal, etc....and plan to get together again
this coming July. This friendship never would have happened had we not first connected on an artistic level
via Flickr....
The pic that has been selected was taken on the edge of Chinatown in Singapore, an area of town that retains a few aspects of days gone by, including a street barber who is still busy with customers.

Thanks for the invite! The story behind the photo is in the Flickr narrative for 00294 - *^^*. Verbatim:
once upon an evening commute home, nethsupatan accompanied (the usually) grumpified maxi on the epping line. She and neth happened to sit close to a baby and his mother; maxi's back to the pair and neth facing them. Neth happened to point out to still grumpled old maxi the cute baby behind her. Maxi, in the grumpled state, grudgingly turned around to see how cute the baby actually was. As soon as she turned around to face the little one, he smiled and giggled.
"That's nice" thought maxi and turned back around. Neth pointed out that the baby had stopped giggling, so maxi turned right around to confirm. As soon as he saw maxi's face again, he started giggling and smiling some more. This repeated itself a couple more times, with confirmation of age (4 months), race (korean) and a confirmation that the giggling and smiling only happened when the baby saw maxi's face (but not the back of her head). After a short while the baby started crying loudly. And maxi turned round again to see. He stopped crying.
"giggle giggle giggle giggle" he went through tear filled eyes, and baby slobber through a smiley face.
"you are lucky!" pointed an asian female sage. "he only giggles when he sees your face, you are very lucky!"
"whaddya mean??" asked degrumpled maxi.
"he is too young to know anything about anything and yet he is very happy to see you! and only you on this carriage!" the female sage continued.
"Oooo!" neth cooed. "That's great! You'll be lucky in money! Or love!"
Lucky my a$$. Still waiting! What do babies know. But he is cute!!! *^^*

After one year on Flickr I've had more inspiration and more creativity in my life than for many years... It's not just about photos but also about getting to know people behind the art. I have made very good friends from all over the world - and the strange thing is, that despite a big difference in timezones, we still manage to be chatting from time to time! A celebration of Flickr is also a celebration for global creativity, inspiration and helping each other.
Thank you for inviting me. I'm honoured.
Photo text: For three years a group of Syrian sculptures have used our city for a symposium in the month of October.
Their ideas and creativity has given a lot of inspiration to the people, who has followed their work. As their friendship have added an extra dimension to the already very international environment we have here.
It's an example of how friendship and creativity pass religious, territorial and man made borders...
