Oprah's Final Book Club Pick: Freedom by Jonathan Franzen
Oprah Has Chosen Her Final Book Club Pick: Freedom By Jonathan Franzen
The End of O Blog reports that Oprah will announce the book Freedom to be her final book club pick ever on Friday's show.
Winfrey is expected to announce on tomorrow’s show that Franzen’s Freedom will be her final talk show book club pick.
This is not the first time that Oprah has chosen a Jonathan Franzen book to be in her world famous book club.
In 2001 she chose his novel The Corrections, but before he could appear on her show she rescinded his invitation because he had made comments about how male readers would be less inclined to read the book now that it had been on Oprah's book list.
In a Time Out review of Freedom, Susannah Felts says the book has:
Panoramic view of a large cast of characters who are realized in meticulous detail? Check. Masterful, complex narrative structure? Check. Elegant, accessible prose? Check. All this, and he delivers on his booming thematic pronouncement of a title, exploring the darker implications of 21st-century-American-style freedom in the post–September 11 climate, the Iraq War, environmental degradation, and even, in the book’s final pages, the Great Recession.
She says he manages to pull this all off.
She calls the book 'good writing, writing that gives the reader plenty to chew on'.
Looks like Oprah's last choice will not disappoint.
