The Oreo invades Britain

Some of us Brits don't 'appreciate' the 'invasion' of American food. Like me for example.

Cookies? That's biscuits to us!

Some British biscuits have already 'died out' and we hardly know what our own biscuits are!

They can send the Oreos back! or they can sell them in specialist American Bakeries in Kensington.

Now this is what Londoners 'should' be eating... here's an old recipe for 'London Buns' for example, that has more or less died out.

LONDON BUNS

1lb strong white flour

2teaspoons salt

1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg

1/2 oz fresh yeast

2oz caster sug

2oz butter, melted

4fl oz warm milk

1 oz candied peel, chopped

1 teaspoon caraway seeds (optional)

1 egg yolk, beaten

Sift the flour, salt and nutmeg into a large mixing bowl. Cream the yeast with the sugar and stir into the milk with the melted butter until well blended. Pour into the flour and add the peel and caraway seeds if using. Mix well and turn out on to a floured surface. Knead well until smooth and elastic, then place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl and cover with a clean towel and leave to rise in a warm place until doubled in size. Knock back the dough and knead for a few mins. Shape into 12 round buns and place on a greased baking sheet. Cover and leave in a warm place to prove for a bout 25 mins until risen. Meanwhile set oven to 425F or mark 7 . Brush the bun lightly with beaten egg yolk and bake for about 10 to 15 mins until golden. Cool on a wire rack.

Yes, you can't beat McVities and their Jaffa Cakes. Apparently there was a legal dispute whether or not they're biscuits or cakes and for tax reasons, they ended up 'being cakes'. As a cyclist, Jaffa cakes are always in cycling mags because they're brilliant for taking on long cycling journeys for energy and don't have much fat.

Umm Rich Tea Biscuits dunked in a cup of tea.....simple but nice.. reminds me I will get some today day, unless they're already 'extinct:'.  When I talk to people in the UK, they seem to get 'all dreamy' about simple British biscuits.

I agree, Beaulieu. Not keen on Oreos either. For me, there is no better biscuit (not cookie) than the Jaffa cake.

There was a legal case about trans fat in Oreos in 2003.

Yeah, I'm a Jaffa Cake convert. When my UK friends visit, I always ask for a few packets of those choco-orange biscuits. I loved Oreos as a kid, but not so much anymore... one of the growing list of things that would disappoint my 10-year-old self.

There is a reason why Americans eat Oreos and why the brits eat biscuits. Americans dont like stale bread!!

Neat story! Personally Oreos aren't my favorite, and I sure can't imagine dunking them in tea, but why not give an opportunity for equal-opportunity snacking?

this is oreo in his first 5 weeks of life he has already gone through so much.
he had very bad eye infections from when he was born the medication,eye drops did not work so he had to have his right eye removed and we are still working on saving his left eye even though he has very limited vision in it . having this disability has not slowed this little guy down at all he runs and plays like nothing has happened to him.he is our little oreo cookie.

I wasn't allowed to have Oreos as a kid, but I love them now. Cookies & Creme ice cream = yum

I grew up with Oreos and I love them with milk. Which is why I now have a cat with the same name and his son is O.J. (Oreo Junior). To be honest; I have no idea why americans call them cookies.

I personally like going to Europe and experiencing just that.  The closest I've come to British food in the states is a local pasty shop here in Florida.  The owners are from London and make the best pasties ever!  Not sure how I feel about American food making it's way into Europe.  Most American snack food is cheaply made and horrible for you.  The picture of the Oreo cupcakes were for my fathers birthday, they are vegan :)
