The "Original Dunkaffiti" Art Piece Slam Dunks on the Web

The NBA is in the middle of a lock-out with its players. The upcoming historic NBA at 65 for the 2011-12 season may be delayed, but the hoopla for the season has been put on canvas to honor the 65th Anniversary milestone of the world's greatest pro basketball league.

The $100,000 - $150,000 estimated 60 x 48 hoops and graffiti art work that is named The "Original Dunkaffiti" has made a Slam Dunk on the Internet so that viewers on the web can see the historical piece dedicated to the 100-year combined Anniversaries of the NBA at 65 and the NBA/ABA Merger at 35.

Dunkaffiti (noun) hoops and hip-hop culture inspired urban graffiti art and graphics.

The NBA was formed on June 6, 1946 in New York City. This past June 6, 2011 marked the 65th Anniversary date that the league was founded. The NBA/ABA Merger was announced to the public on June 17, 1976. This past June 17, 2011 marked the 35th Anniversary of the historic merger that grew the league from 18 to 22 teams. The 2011 NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks were the 23rd NBA franchise in 1980.

Both milestone Anniversaries were celebrated last June 2011. The NBA (1946) and the ABA (1967) both began as 11-team leagues.

The "Original Dunkaffiti" was constructed by a local Baltimore-area graffiti artists who was commissioned by the NBHHCM (National Basketball & Hip-Hop Culture Month) Foundation to do the art.

The "Original Dunkaffiti" was completed on June 1, 2011 the first day of observance for NBHHCM 2K11.

The day the NBA was formed and the release of the pioneering hip-hop classic movie 'Beat Street' share the same date June 6th. Beat Street was released in 1984.

The "Original Eleven" NBA teams in graffiti-art font is a major highlight of the artwork.

The 4 former NBA stars Artis Gilmore, Julius "Dr. J" Erving, George "Ice Man" Gervin, and David "Sky Walker" Thompson were all participants in the ABA Slam Dunk Contest at the last ABA All-Star Game in 1976. Dr. J defeated David Thompson to win the first-ever pro Slam Dunk Contest. The 4-stars also represent the four ABA teams that were part of the merger.

The NBA introduced the Slam Dunk Contest at the 1984 NBA All-Star Weekend.

The NBHHCM (National Basketball & Hip-Hop Culture Month) Foundation will present The "Original Dunkaffiti" to New York auction houses Sotheby's or Christie's to organize the private auction of the piece.

Since 2009 20 of the 30 NBA team cities have proclaimed and observed June as NBHHCM.
