Palins attacks Obama, failed to notice McCain said the same thing about killing civilians

In recent days on the campaign trail, Palin has made it a point to go after Obama for suggesting that because we were merely air raiding villages, civilians were getting killed. Something that Ret. General McCaffrey has repeated in numerous appearances for Pentagon and military officials.

I checked into the history of McCain, and I found an article posted by the Washington Post that showed McCain himself had made similar comments regarding Kosovo.

During a Republican Primary debate in 2000, McCain called the Clinton strategy in Kosovo "obscene" because it forced American troops into using tactics that meant civilians were going to get killed.

McCain said: "In the most obscene chapter in American history is the conduct of the Kosovo conflict when the President of the United States refused to prepare for ground operations, refused to have air power used effectively because he wanted them flying -- he had them flying at 15,000 feet where they killed innocent civilians because they were dropping bombs from such -- in high altitude."

That is almost exactly what Barack Obama said last year about U.S. troops in Afghanistan, when he said the U.S. strategy has led to air strikes rather than controlling the ground — a remark that McCain, in a new ad announced this week, calls "dishonorable."

Here are Obama's words: "We've got to get the job done there and that requires us to have enough troops so that we're not just air-raiding villages and killing civilians, which is causing enormous pressure over there."

Palin is reaching out depserately to help fill in the large gaps apparent in the McCain/Palin ticket. She seems to be grasping at straws. The polls show that the constant attacks from McCain and Palin against Obama, with no positive ads present, or no plan in sight for the economy that differs from the Bush plan has left McCain trailing by 11 points. Perhaps Palin ought to look up the record of her own running mate before she goes on the attack. It would save them a lot of embarrassment.

iraqivetwifeforchange, I think your story has potential but needs some improvement. I've got a few suggestions, and if you give them a try, I'd be happy to remove this flag.

I wasnt sure what was newsworthy in this story. News should always be about posting current stuff - new things you've discovered.

Please review What Makes News News. It can really help if you follow the old "W5" news formula -- making sure you have answered the questions: Who? What? Where? When? And Why? (You might want to check out our J-Tips for more help.)

News should not always be about current stuff. Sometimes, things people do or say in the past is very relevant to what is going on in today's political arena. In this instance, the news of the past ties in directly to a comment made by Palin as recently as yesterday.

Many people post stuff here from others, using the highlight to obtain quotes and articles from other writers and journalists.  They did not discover it themselves, they simply researched and found news from others. It is up to the public to decide what is newsworthy. And I veer from words like "always" especially when it is intertwined in your own opinion of what is news.  I answered all of the questions from W5. I would appeal to someone else on this format to review my post. I feel you have expressed some journalistic bias that interferes with what others may find interesting.

Here is a link to an article, dated October 7, 2008, with a similar assessment.

This subject has gained a certain amount of traction since the details sited by Governor Palin, as she campaigns, are featured in a new McCain-Palin campaign ad that has aired on television.

Yes. That has been the running theme as of late. Cindy McCain has jumped on the "blinders" bandwagon. She attacks Obama for voting against a bill to fund troops, when her own husband voted against the same bill when it included a time table, which Obama then voted for. In fact, there is a ton of hypocracy coming from that side lately. This is just one of many items where Palin and McCain have sunken their own ship. It only brings to light their own track record. Ironic.
