General Larry Platt is too old to be competing in American Idol as he is almost 63, but as Simon said:

"I have a horrible feeling that song could be a hit," is all Simon could muster by the end of it, adding, "I don't think this is the last we'll hear from you."

As with most young folks, most of you are missing the message behind the song. "The General" has been, and in some sense still is, on the front line of the civil rights struggle in this country. Having fought long and hard, having watched the blood of good, decent, honest men and women spilled on the ground to gain equality in this society, how do you imagine he feels watching the youth of today who have no self-pride and do not value the opportunities they have today because of the sacrifices of people like Mr. Platt. Though he could have certainly delivered a stronger and more direct message, he's making the point that young folks, particularly young african american males, have no understanding of the sacrifices that have been made on their behalf, and walking around with your pants on the ground is basically showing your a$$ to those who have given so much of themselves to break down barriers to opportunities that are being wasted. The song is more than entertainment, but you have to get your mental state off the ground along with your pants to get that message.
