Paranormal Activity Buzzes Its Way to Box Office Gold!
I'm sure you've heard of Paranormal Activity by now. It's the horror movie that many are calling the new Blair Witch Project. Shot for $15,000, the story revolves around the simple premise of a San Diego couple who decide to document the "weird things" that occur at their two-story home.
Instead of doing a traditional release, Paramount, the studio behind the picture, is slowing expanding it every week. They rather it makes money through word of mouth instead of an aggressive campaign and opening it 2,000-3,000 theaters from the getgo. The plan is working. This weekend it expanded to only 159 theaters and opened in 4th place on Friday with $2.5 million. A weekend gross close to $10 million is possible. That's not bad for a movie only playing at 159 theaters.
But is it good? Most critics think so, but audiences are divided. While most seem to enjoy it, a lot of them do feel like it's over-hyped. You can judge for yourself once you see it or if you already have then state your opinion in the comment section below.
