I am one of 47 experienced and dedicated voluntary call takers at the Newcastle call centre for Parentlineplus.  We have just been informed that our centre along with Nottingham and Croydon is to close. The centres in Hadleigh, Hertfordshire and Kentish Town are to remain open in an effort to create ''greater synergy between offices''

The Newcastle office meets all targets and has 13 new call takers are in the middle of their training.  We cost Parentline nothing and volunteers have given, overall 17,502 hours at £0,000,000 cost.  Meanwhile, the 124 paid staff have taken £3,560,000  of our funds in wages.

The Newcastle call centre is on lease until 2011 and will remain open for the few part time paid staff.  The volunteers being finished in March 2010.  Why not keep the help lines open until then ?  Is it because the few people left will have no voice and it can all be done quietly ?

We were only informed of this decision last week and during our 'discussion' with senior staff from headquarters they expressed a view that people no longer want to talk on a help line and that the way forward is from a good webpage.  We dispute this.

Further more, we believe that our centre in Newcastle is more cost effective than the London based.

If anyone can help us fight to stay open we would appreciate it
