Paul Haggis Quits Scientology in Letter to Tommy Davis

Director Paul Haggis has left the Church of Scientology. One of the reasons cited for Paul Haggis' leaving Scientology was the Church of Scientology's support of California's Prop 8, which banned gay marriage. In a letter to Tommy Davis, head of the Church of Scientology's Celebrity Centre, Haggis wrote, "I told you I could not, in good conscience, be a member of an organization where gay-bashing was tolerated." Another reason cited by Paul Haggis was Scientology's practice of disconnection, where members break ties with people in their lives who are critical of Scientology. Haggis cites his wife's parents as proof that the policy does indeed exist. Paul Haggis' Scientology resignation letter is now all over the Internet, and can be found via the link below.

In a stunning move, Haggis has written a letter explaining his exit to Tommy Davis, the celebrity wrangler for Scientology and the son of Scientologist actress Anne Archer. The veracity of the letter has been confirmed by a friend of Haggis.

Frankly,
I had to look no further than your refusal to denounce the church’s
anti-gay stance, and the indefensible actions, and inactions, of those
who condone this behavior within the organization. I am only ashamed
that I waited this many months to act. I hereby resign my membership in
the Church of Scientology.

There is something interesting here and unspoken. Is there a perfect church or a perfect practice?  Probably not. Are people not suppose to speak their opinions because they are not politically correct. The Church of Scientology has weaknesses, but when I look at it, it has so much good, and there are so many good deeds, so much help and while I don't believe that they are or should be perfect, I at least look the great, and there are so many great things in the church that to look at it as having to be the way I want it without working to make it work out that way is just to have a spoiled brat idea.  The other thing is I would love to see some things in Scientology that are not available right now. But don't throw the baby out with the bath water.  It is much, much more good than not and they are helping in the areas of education, drugs problems, criminal activities and they have truly been the great new kid on the block over the last few decades. And I do respect Paul Haggis' decision and wish him well. But again, look at all the works not just one or two.

@freedomLovinghmmm,....just wondering,.....what good are you talking about??? The only area they have been good in - is - in the scamming people of of their money  & intimidating them area.At the end, the only thing that will be "CLEAR" is your bank account. Wake up FreedomLoving!

Not only that janet119 in regard to your response to freedomloving, no where does it state in the Bible you get to heaven according to your good works. It's by faith and believing in Jesus Christ and the fact that he died for our sins. No work is going to pave anyone's way into heaven. An evil person can do a lot of good work because it can be written off on their taxes, doesn't mean they will be awarded in the end.

GUYS.... I WORKED FOR NARCONON ...A SCIENTOLOGY TREATMENT CENTER. IN CASE YOU ALL DONT KNOW, HUBBARD WAS A SCIENCE FICTION WRITER THE WHOLE CONCEPT( AFTER YOU SPEND THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS AND "LEVELS OF CLEAR")  IS BASED ON A STORY FROM A SERIES HE WROTE CALLED "BATTLEFIELD EARTH"  (starring......... John Travolta  in the movie) This is NOT a "religion".... those are based on GOD. Scientology has taken people's property, houses, duped thousands into paying for a science fiction story. want more info? write me @ johncorsino@aol.com Cruise, Travolta etc....are great actors, but not very bright individuals (doesnt anybody believe in GOD anymore??)   p.s       ignore it all you want if you are gay, but old AND new testament calls it             an ABOMINATION.   Maybe its just not convienent to believe........

I think Janet110 hit the nail on the head.  I can't believe all the sheep that have fallen for a religion that not only takes away your first ammendment rights by cutting off all those that don't support scientology INCLUDING FAMILY MEMBERS.  I also can't go along with the church spending money (probably millions) to ruin the right of people regardless of gender to be unable to marry and go through all the tax, etc., that "straight" married couples have to deal with along with the expense of divorce if that should happen.  Some of the "good" they do such as the treatment centers are put together for a tax right off or to improve their image.  I'll stick with my personal belief of God without any organized religion and I will live more free than those that are watched, monitored, dictated to, and taken for the larger the dollars spent to support your believe and blackmail if you choose to leave.  Scientology is nothing but a cult and I applaud France for taking the actions they have taken against Scientology.

even thought scientology helps like fredomloving says,i don't think its a religion i describe it more like an organization that empties out peoples' bank accounts and takes their homes. now people does god take from you? no, he gives you more. he gives you without asking nothing in return. and even if people make mistakes he forgives them. scientology is a "non profit organizationn" based on some crazy writter's idea of a perfect world where there is no war or no bad and where people are "IMMORTAL SPIRITUAL BEINGS" and where people also go through TRAUMATIZING AND PAINFUL "TREATMENTS" TO FIND YOURSELF. isn't that considered psycological abuse to the person? or maybe torture rings a bell? i think the government is nuts for allwing this to be happening, and for considering this a charity organization.and so far i havent's met anybody who has avoided dead. or re-encarnated into a new life or has comeback from some extraterrestial planet to find itself. all i have reaad about scientology sounds like a sci-fi movie to me. maybe tom crise liked the idea of living somewhere in space to avoid dead. we just have to wait to see what happends when they have lost everyhting and everyone in their lives.

I agree with most of what Sallie711 said, except that churches have a right not to promote same sex married couples.

I agree with meanmom. It's amazing that everybody has made same sex marriage a social issue. It's a moral and biblical issue. It can't truly be compared to the origination of the civil rights movement either. Being born black can't be prevented, but wanting to marry the same sex and expecting people to accept it and even change laws to defend it can.Though I love everyone I can't support everything, especially if it contradicts the bible that's forever proven! Same sex marriage isn't natural no more than you can find two male or female animals mating and producing. So if it's not found in nature, what makes it natural for humans even when animals know better?

Dwright2009....I have seen 2 same sex animals 'trying' to mate.  Try going to a dog park....you are sure to find a male dog trying to hump another male dog....it's not unusual nor unheard of.   Same sex marriage is a social issue.  I'm not so sure you know what a social issue is.  But all this is off topic....scientology is a cult...plain and simple.  Each of us has a right to our beliefs as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else and those same beliefs are not forced on someone else.  Good luck to Paul.
