Italian websites www.corriere.it and www.repubblica.it - respectively from noted newspapers Corriere della Sera and La Repubblica - reported today about the death of actor Paul Newman.

Repubblica quotes some US blogs while both have as a source Vincenzo Manes, head of the Dynamo Camp / Fondazione Dynamo foundation that was linked to Newman's charities. Manes apparently received an e-mail from the US early in the morning, 7:30am Central European Time, telling him Newman succumbed to cancer. He was reported saying "Paul Newman is no longer with us". Newman died at home in Westport, Connecticut.

No information was available immediately on the Dynamo Camp or Fondazione Dynamo websites, though. An email sent through the foundation website has not received replies yet.

US website Awardsdaily.com was one of those apparently spreading the news first: a post by Sasha Stone just said "An unconfirmed report just came in from AD reader Kubrickguy. Newman was battling cancer but must have lost the fight. Long live Paul Newman".

A few hours later, BBC and CNN also confirmed the sad news.

Newman was born in 1925 and his Wikipedia biography describes him as "actor, film director, entrepreneur, race car driver, racing team owner and humanitarian".

Winner of several major awards including an Academy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Cannes Film Festival Award and an Emmy award, he was also active and successful in the world of race cars, both as a driver and as a team owner. He had established a food company called "Newman's Own" whose entire profit is devoted to charity.

Due to high traffic onto Newman's Own website, a few moments after then news started circulating on major networks and Internet sites, the homepage was replaced with a message commemorating the actor and beginning with the words: "We remember the Life and Legacy of our Founder".

Paul Newman has passed away? Is there more? Confirmation, press releases?  If true this should be front page and breaking news.

Though I don't yet see any official report that Newman has died, his foundation has released a statement referring to him in the past tense:

Remembering the life and legacy of Paul Newman, Newman's Own Foundation has issued a statement. The statement, from Vice-Chairman Robert Forrester, follows: "Paul Newman's craft was acting. His passion was racing. His love was his family and friends. And his heart and soul were dedicated to helping make the world a better place for all. "Paul had an abiding belief in the role that luck plays in one's life, and its randomness. He was quick to acknowledge the good fortune he had in his own life, beginning with being born in America, and was acutely aware of how unlucky so many others were. True to his character, he quietly devoted himself to helping offset this imbalance.

djbatman:

A sad day today for all who cared for and admired the life of Paul Newman.

May his checkered flag wave high, long and proud at every motorsports venue around the world.

Long live the memory of a true American Sportsman!

This story was the first I've heard of this on any English-language site, and much more has since appeared; we're collecting coverage via a Feature Channel.

He was a handsome man, (a beautyfull man inside the beautyfull ones). In his films He played around 56 different roles. Now he is gone, and we have lost an excelent actor, a proud father and an great husband. But we have not lost him forever, his deep and blue eyes, jontly with his humanity will allways remain in our minds and in our hearths. Thanks Paul to be between us.

Newman's driver had just won the Edmonton Grand Prix. I'd waited all afternoon for this shot. I wrote the story of my very brief encounter of him at http://photoshopbasicsin6hours.blogspot.com/2008/06/stalking-paul-newman.html

Thanks for writing this. It was really a good recap of a great actor.

it's hard not to admire Paul Newman for putting his money to work in such productive ways, such as his Newman's Own line--high quality stuff and the proceeds go to good causes... very smart.
