PBS Launches New Video Portal for Public Broadcasting

PBS took a bite out of Hulu's playbook on Wednesday when the American Public Broadcasting Service debuted its new video portal site, which features an extensive catalogue of video clips and streamed, full episodes of a number of PBS television shows.

This is a commendable move for PBS; not only have the opted not to geofence their content to restrict it to US-only viewers, they have also pushed toward social media integration of their broadcast content, with videos able to be easily shared to Facebook and Digg.

On a personal note, the site has allowed me to rediscover (and rekindle my love of) the excellent PBS science series NOVA.

The News Hour with Jim Lehrer, NOVA, Antiques Roadshow, and other PBS programs all have their own pages on the site, where users can view a variety of video in the organization’s own custom player. You can also browse by topic to find video about culture, science, or history, for example.

As with the PBS shows you watch on TV, there aren’t commercial interruptions, but rather, corporate sponsors that are mentioned at the start of each clip.

Hello Jarrett,

I've loved the Hulu site for some time now and watched quite a few of their full length movies.  I'm look forward to checking out the PBS video site to see what it has to offer.  As a fan of all science programs, I also enjoy the NOVA series.

Great story Jarrrett, thank  you for bringing it to us!
