Petition to ban NHS Direct making huge profits on 0870 numbers
Not only have the NHS have been making profits charging cancer patients and other sick people for parking their car at the hospitals, they are making huge profits on their hotline numbers and now a petition has been sent to No 10 calling for these charges to be dropped.
Will these profits go towards another expensive sculpture, or similar extravagance?
"Local health centres and NHS medical practices should be banned from using 08 numbers or offer a local 01 or 02 number alternative for booking appointments, as health centres make a profit using these numbers. For example, an 0870 number costs 10 pence per minute (whereby 4.5pence per minute goes to the local hospital)".
One person has told me that they are charging £1 a minute for some of these calls.

Curtains and plush carpets, I've heard. Disgraceful.

NHS Direct number is 0845 46 47. No sign of 0870 there, unless they've changed numbers and forgot to tell everyone. Perhaps you are referring only to NHS GPs who decide to bump up their profits by making extra money off a captive audience
