Phoebe Prince, a 15-year-old from South Hadley, Massachusetts, is believed to have committed suicide due to cyber bullying. Friends of Phoebe Prince have reported that the teen, who recently immigrated from Ireland, had been bullied and harassed by classmates. Some of the bullying extended to harassing Phoebe Prince via her Facebook page.

“The real problem now is the texting stuff and the cyber-bullying,’’ said South Hadley School Superintendent Gus A. Sayer. “Some kids can be very mean towards one another using that medium.’’

The bullying didn't end after the death of Phoebe Prince. Several nasty messages were posted on a Phoebe Prince Facebook Memorial page. While police are still investigating, it is believed that Prince may have been bullied over dating issues.

A makeshift memorial for Phoebe Prince took place over the weekend.

This story is horrifying on so many levels.  The girls that were involved in this hopefully will be haunted by their actions for the rest of their lives.  Unfortunately, I wonder if they have the conscious that would allow this type of remorse to happen when I hear that they continued to post nasty comments even after this tragic event.  I have a teenage daughter and I have been speaking to her about empathy, self-confidence, and respecting others since she was old enough to speak/listen.  Parents need to set the expectation that this is not "normal" behavior.  It is not an excuse to say it is "typical" pre-teen/teen behavior.  I can't tell you how many times I have heard "Girls can be so mean at that age".  Parents need to set the bar high and talk about it constantly.  I am so very sad for the Prince family, our country (as this incident will be equated to America in Ireland), and our society (if we are going to accept this behavior as part of growing up).  The only people I don't feel sorry for are the girls who caused this young woman to feel like she did not want to live anymore because of the way she was being treated.  Shame on you!

Unacceptable

I so agree with you.  I just found out about that young girl.  My heart absolutely breaks for what she must have endured and what her family must be going through.  All parents want the best for their kids.  They must have wanted a better life for their daughter by coming to America, just as my father did for me.  Instead, they experience the worse sort of agony.  VERY SAD! I see bullying as a three-fold problem:

  • inadequate parenting,
  • inefficient educational system,
  • underwhelming laws.
If these issues are not address together, there never will be a solution. Any kids suspected of bullying, should be forced into court-ordered anger management class along with their parents.  Issues like that most likely spring from problems at home.  Regardless of the situation, both should attend anger classes at their own cost. The schools need to do a better job isolating bullies from their victims. Some kids are more susceptible than others to being bullied. I was a shy, unassuming kid.  I was often targeted.  My father didn't want me to get in trouble and not go to college. He always told me to report inscidents to teachers and to focus on my books.  I was never taught to fight back.  My naturally more assertive sister fought all of my battles. Today, I am a more assertive adult.  When my 9 yr old niece got bullied and came home depressed, I told her to muster all the anger she could and to hit back harder each time.  She did that and, thankfully, it stopped. She was lucky, though.  Many bullies are persistent and carry weapons.  Adult or child, we can't survive that! All three problems have to be addressed as a unit.

RIP Phoebe Prince

Phoebe Prince was a beautiful Irish girl with an angeletic Irish accent. These bullies were jealous and insecure. They see someone that is a hundred times better than them in every way and feel they have to beat her down to there level. Instead of appreciating someone that wonderful to be in there lives and have the privilege to even know, they do the opposite because they are threatened by the fact they are nothing compared to her. I hope they suffer the pain she felt because of those bullies 100 fold. There time will come.

The problem with the way this played out and of all involved is no, they won't be haunted by their part in it,   for the rest of their lives. Maybe if they live that long sometime in middle age they might occationally remember their classmate who didn't get to experience life as an adult because their actions as worthless subhumans deprived her of the rest of her life. But I wouldn't count on it.

More likely they won't even remember her name...

No, this is not normal behavior, I raised 3 kids and not one of them, nor any of their friends ever conducted themselves like these. It seems some of the adults of tomorrow are a sad, sorry bunch and the comments left by many on this article is proof as to how bad it really is...

Hello everyone, I was bullied in grade school, junior high & high school by the same kind of mean girls, and I didn't even date anyone or have sex with any guys -- I am still a virgin today.  Those bullies should face the law, along with their parents -- prosecute the parents too -- the parents failed to correct & restrain their kids.  I was often the target of bullies.  It is criminal and cowardly behavior.  I totally agree -- let the parents be disciplined along with their kids.  Anger management is never enough.  You know, public exposure of the bullies and their parents is the best thing.  Why?  Because then everyone gets a chance to condemn their evil & wicked behavior.  The Puritans had it right!  They threw an offender in the stocks so that the criminal would repent and never do it again.  It was public humiliation!  And other Puritans learned from their bad example -- as behavior that should be avoided!  If they choose to repent, they must be given that chance too.  But for now, their names should be published.  As Proverbs in the Bible says, a good reputation is better than gold.  You can never recover from a bad reputation.  It's true!  And these bullies will find it true too.  Send them and their parents to jail, not just the bullies, but their parents too.  The parents need to be held accountable -- here in Kansas City metro area, some parents have held drinking parties at their houses with underage teens there & drinking -- so the police raided these parties and now the parents who did that are in jail.  Justice got served to them, after they had been serving drinks to teens.

The principal should be fired and held accountable as an accomplice; from what I read this has been going on for a long time and these girls/boys taunted others.  The school board should be sued.  Does this district have police on campus? If so, something is terribly wrong in Hadley!

THE PRINCIPAL SHOULD BE HANGED OUTSIDE OF THE MEXICAN BORDER FOR THE ACTS OF PURE EVIL HE COMMITED!!!1

I have no doubt that the bullies who hounded Phoebe Prince feel no remorse whatsoever.  Once they get off these charges, imagine how wild they will run bullying others ("Remember what we did to Phoebe Prince?  What she got will seem like a picnic once we're through with you...").

phoebe was one of my good friends who i only was able to know for 3 weeks . its terrible what the bastards did to her . going to school everyday doesnt feel the same anymore because as soon as i got  to school their she was waiting for me and then we would talk and joke around with eachother . Now i cant do that anymore with her and thats what pains me the most. pne of our joke was " phoebe did you bring your pot of gold with you today?" i would say to her She would reply " Not today but maybe tommorow" she would always make me laugh and she was just a sweet girl. She had only been in the country for 3 months hoping to find a place to fit in but people made it very difficult for her. i hope the people who caused her death will rot in hell for what they done to her. rest in peace phoebe , i know ill see again one day.

Wish someone would post the names of the people who bullied her.  The world should know who these people are, maybe they would like a taste of their own medicine.

Yes, JusticeforPhoebe, all we want are the names of the girls, their parents, their parents' employers, home addresses, phone # - let them see what it is like to be bullied. Someone in that town just has to post Anonymously and they don't have to tell anyone in their town that they did it. Please, someone, the public is enraged and wants to give these families a dose of their own medicine. We Want Names!!!

Justice needs to be served .

The girl only lived here for 3 months ? & she was only 15 years old ?! & these kids are 17 & 18 .  . . I hope they get everything they deserve !!!! If they put them in jail , they should get beaten & bullied like they did her & get a taste of it . . I know if I had of went to school with these kids . . . They wouldn't like it ; and the tables would definitely be turned . . The parents & kids & their whole families should be ashamed & full of guilt  . . . I hope the guilt eats them alive. . They sound like nothing but trashy kids .

This is correct.

Thanks for the info.  Now, can we please have the PARENT'S NAMES since they too are largely to blame for allowing the behavior of their monster children to persist.

Char

You are absolutely correct.  The parents should also accept responsibility for the death of this young woman.  They couldn't possibly have missed their child's deviant behavior.  I also believe the school system played a role in the death of this young girl.  This bullying was not a well-kept secret and if the school administration and parents had done their jobs and taken action early on, maybe we wouldn't be mourning the death of a girl who felt dying was the only way to escape these psychopathic teens.

The teachers and principal's names should be published.  They knew for some time serious bullying happene and did NOTHING.

I hope they are harassed for as long as they unfortunately live.

I suspect Flannery Mullins is the queen bee. The others jump very high for her benefits.

I agree with JusticeforPhoebe...what are the names of these kids that bullied her?.  The guys names also. And their parents....enough said. It should be PUBLICALLY exposed for sure.

names

The following miscreants are about to learn a lesson in civility the hard way. Names and charges are as follows: Sean Mulveyhill, 17, of South Hadley, has been charged with statutory rape, criminal harrassment, violation of civil rights resulting in bodily injury, and disturbing a school assembly. Austin Renaud, 18, of Springfield has been charged with statutory rape. Kayla Narey, 17, of South Hadley, has been charged with violation of civil rights resulting in bodily injury, criminal harrassment, disturbing a school assembly. Ashley Longe, 16, has been charged violation of civil rights resulting in bodily injury. Flannery Mullins, 16, South Hadley, has been charged with violation of civil rights resulting in bodily injury and stalking. Sharon Chanon Velazquez, 16, of South Hadley, has been charged violation of civil rights resulting in bodily injury and stalking.

To justiceforphoebe, The bullies' names are Kayla Narey, Shanon Chanon Valezquez, Ashley Longe, and Flannery Mullins. Two boys were involved as well, Sean Mulveyhill and Austin Renaud. They deserve everything bad coming their way.

I can see what you, along with most of the other comments on this page, are saying. but two wrongs most certainly do not make a right. It is horrible what these girls did to Phoebe, but they're kids. Kids who yes, should be punished for their actions. But jailtime? Isn't that a little harsh? These girls need to live out the rest of their lives as well and not be haunted by this for the rest of it. Kids make mistakes.

armybrat

no way. these little sociopaths deserve to be locked up. if thet are capable of something this horrible now, then what do you think the little monsters will do later on in life? especially if they get away with this, hey we can torture someone to death and nothing will happen to us,sweet. fuck that. and lets not forget their assclown parents. maybe they should have done some actual parenting? oh no my daughter's not a violent kid, she is a mean nasty bully you stupid bitch!!!!! nice work. way to bring up a nice respectable young lady. poor phoebe. RIP . no more pain.

susiq

Are you kidding me?  Why should they get to live out their lives as if nothing happened?  They at least deserve jail time - they are not "kids" -  and their actions were  assault and battery.

7
JAIL TIME OR THEY WONT LEARN

Are you serious about what you saying. These kids pushed a girl to comitte suicide. are you dumb are you sniffing crystal meth?????????? These kids need to be in jail. how will they ever know what they did was wrong if all we do is give them a slap on the wraist. FUCK THE REST OF THEIR LIVES THEY DONT DESERVE TO HAVE ONE BECAUSE THEY DID NOT ALLOW PHOEBE TO HAVE ONE YOU DUMB ASS BITCH. GET A FUCKING CLUE LET THEM GET THEIR ASS WOPED IN JAIL EVERY NIGHT AND FUCKED HARD WITH A LAMP POST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

rsg0511

Are you kidding me lady? They should spend a long time in jail..what they did to Phoebe is unforgiveable and they do not deserve a break! Phoebe should have been able to live her life, but can she now? No! All because of what those kids did to her! So, no they dont deserve a break! They should of thought about the rest of their lives before they did what they did! They should be punished severely and this should follow them for the rest of their lives!
