Piers Morgan interviews Oprah Winfrey

Piers Morgan took his first swing at being the new Larry King, though it was unclear which show Piers Morgan Tonight actually was: a new interview program featuring Piers Morgan, former Daily Mirror editor, or Oprah Winfrey's first foray into evening television.

For a show which promised "wow" moments during its long promo campaign, perhaps Piers Morgan should have chosen a first guest who hasn't had her own show for nearly 25 years. If there's one person you will not surprise during a taped interview, it's Oprah Winfrey.

It's early days, though, and perhaps Morgan can bring it with tonight's guest, Howard Stern. The shock jock seems to have warmed up for his appearance by dissing Jay Leno. On Thursday's show, Ricky Gervais will appear, still riding the wave of "did he really say that?" from his Golden Globes gig.

"How have I done?" Piers Morgan asked yesterday at the end of his debut as Larry King's replacement as CNN's primetime chatshow host.

"You have been surprising," his first guest, Oprah Winfrey, diplomatically replied.

The Boston Globe said Piers was by turns charming, vain, well informed, and fawning — but mostly just fawning.
