Witness Gulabi Gang 22 Oct Part 1

Bandar, Uttar Pradesh, India

They wear pink saris and go after corrupt officials and boorish men with sticks and axes.

The several hundred vigilante women of India's northern Uttar Pradesh state's Banda area proudly call themselves the "gulabi gang" (pink gang), striking fear in the hearts of wrongdoers and earning the grudging respect of officials.

The pink women of Banda shun political parties and NGOs because, in the words of their feisty leader, Sampat Pal Devi, "they are always looking for kickbacks when they offer to fund us".

Two years after they gave themselves a name and an attire, the women in pink have thrashed men who have abandoned or beaten their wives and unearthed corruption in the distribution of grain to the poor.

They have also stormed a police station and attacked a policeman after they took in an untouchable man and refused to register a case.

find out what else they've been up to----->

They train in self-defence with traditonal long sticks or staffs, and men have also joined them.

Sampat Pal Devi, mother of five, wife of an ice cream vendor and former government worker, says, “Nobody comes to our help in these parts. The officials and the police are corrupt and anti-poor. So sometimes we have to take the law in our hands. At other times, we prefer to shame the wrongdoers.”

According to 25-year-old gang member Aarti Devi, “Men used to think the law didn’t apply to them but we are forcing a huge change.”

It's about time the women started to fight back and protect their own, shame the men. Maybe it'll catch on elsewhere.

The video was very telling, René...  Shame some still discriminate by the Caste system.

What a can of worms that opens up. Some claim the caste system was more open before the muslim invasion.

Rene, thanks so much for bringing this to us. It's a shame that there are so many women there who are ignored, and it shows that one person can make a difference worldwide regardless of her meager surroundings.

I highly recommend viewing the related video by 25-year-old Shagun Rastogi that she has available at Current.com. Superb bit of reporting that I was unable to upload due to NP file size limits.

women can be quite effective when they band together. It's necessary in countries where abusive men try to keep them isolated and helpless, for there be any chance of getting better rights and protection from the law, or even to get better laws.
