Pink Shirt Day in some Nova Scotia schools
It is a happy irony, or maybe divine justice, that a bullying incident in Nova Scotia created an anti-bullying campaign that reached kids worldwide. Today in Cambridge, N.S., the small town where it all started, kids are wearing pink to show that they are united against bullying.
It's pink shirt day today at some Nova Scotia schools. It all started last year when two Nova Scotia students turned the tide against the bullies who picked on a fellow student for wearing pink.
The victim — a Grade 9 boy at Central Kings Rural High School in the small community of Cambridge — wore a pink polo shirt on his first day of school. Bullies harassed the boy, called him a homosexual for wearing pink and threatened to beat him up, students said.
Two Grade 12 students — David Shepherd and Travis Price — heard the news and decided to take action. They went to a nearby discount store and bought 50 pink shirts, including tank tops, to wear to school the next day.
BC Liberals made headlines last year when they united all the parties in the house for one day by copying the kids and having all MLAs wear pink shirts to the legislature.
The official "stand up to bullying" day is November 21. Students across North America have adopted the "pink shirt statement" by wearing pink on that day.

Following a movement begun in several high schools thoughout Nova Scotia, students at Hants East Rural High declared one day "Anti-Bullying Day" and encouraged everyone to wear pink to stand up against bullying. A small group of students made about 300 ribbon pins and passed them out to everyone who wanted to sign the anti-bullying pledge. The day was a huge success and will be repeated annually on the second Thursday of every school year.

I absolutely love this story. It shows how one gesture on the side of the doing the right thing can have a ripple effect on society. Those two seniors didn't let the bullying slide, they took it to task and won. Good for them!
