Venerable alt-music weblog and indie-critic/album review institution Pitchfork have announced the dates and initial lineup for the 2009 edition of their annual Pitchfork Music Festival.

This year's fest will be held in Chicago from July 17-19, 2009.

The initial lineup heralds the return of throwback artists including Built to Spill, Yo La Tengo, Tortoise and the first Jesus Lizard show in a decade — alongside newer artists such as The National, Vivian Girls, Grizzly Bear, and The Walkmen.

One unique twist on the conventional music fest format, is that Pitchfork's Friday night will be a series of crowdsourced song sets determined by fans. Ticket holders will be able to vote on the songs from each band they would like to hear and, according to Pitchfork, "the bands will tailor their set lists accordingly".

This photo is from when Built to Spill appeared with the Meat Puppets and Dinosaur Jr. at Terminal 5 in New York City. Their set included Perfect From Now On in its entirety, as well as a few songs from the following album, Keep it Like a Secret. The show concluded with members from each of the bands participating in a rambunctious, instrument-trading, poetry-reading, guitar-strap-strangling jam-fest.
