Mesha Irizaary's only child, 23-year-old African American honor student, Idriss Stelley, was killed by the San Francisco Police Department on June 13, 2001, with 48 shots by nine officers, as he stood alone in an empty theater, experiencing an emotional breakdown.

Many mental patients are hurt or killed during arrest attempts each year.  Ironically, the LAPD policeman shot by police today appears to have been having his own neurotic episode.

LOS ANGELES — Long Beach police officers shot and wounded an off-duty Los Angeles police officer early Wednesday, authorities confirmed.

Officer Jason Geggie, a 1 1/2-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department, was shot after Long Beach officers responded to a call about a person brandishing a gun while walking down the street, Long Beach police Sgt. Dina Zapalski said.

Officers arriving at the scene on Mira Mar Avenue shot Geggie, 26, in the arm and torso. "The officers got there and found the suspect in the area," Zapalski said. "When they went to contact him, he was armed with a firearm, and the circumstances led to an officer-involved shooting."

She did not give additional details but said Geggie pointed a gun toward officers.

The Long Beach officer who fired his weapon was placed on standard three-day administrative leave, Zapalski said.

Geggie, a Long Beach resident currently assigned to the LAPD's central traffic division, was taken to a local hospital and was in stable condition.

He was booked for investigation of two counts of exhibiting a firearm in a threatening manner, including once in the presence of a police officer.

Zapalski said investigators were trying to determine why Geggie was armed."We're still trying to figure that out," she said. "We have no idea why he was walking down the street with a firearm."

Long Beach police said a gun was recovered at the scene and none of its officers were injured.
Both police departments were investigating the shooting.

Ms. Irizarry is Director of the ISF Foundation, which was created in 2003 through the settlement of Mesha Irizarry s vs. City & County and SFPD, is dedicated to assisting persons and families who have suffered by excessive use of force by police officers.

Idriss Stelley's case is at the root of:

* the 40-HR mandatory SFPD Mental Health Training, ratified in SF in March 2002

* the San Francisco Police reform proposition (Prop H) that passed by a substantial margin on the November 2003 San Francisco ballot

We sympathize with and appreciate police officers who face much stress on their jobs while they go about trying to serve and protect the public.  Perhaps since many officers themselves break under stress, more of them should empathize with citizens who have emotional and mental dysfunctions.

Hello!  Some of you know that I collect heroes.  Mesha Irizaary is among my very best heroes.  This bereaved mother turned her pain after losing her only child into a vast and effective network of human rights groups that bring comfort to families who also lost loved ones to police violence and advocate for victims of brutality or unjust practices.  She oversees police watch organizations and founded several disability rights and support groups.  Altogether, Mesha hosts more than 100 online groups with members seeking justice and support.  I appreciate Mesha's warmth and dedication to help many other families, like mine, who have suffered at the hands of an unjust justice system.  Because Mesha speaks several languages, she is able to help a diverse population.  She is literally on call 24/7.

Like many of my heroes, I have never met Mesha personally, but I hope to some day.  Mesha Irizaary is definitely some kind of hero!  Welcome to my list, Sister Mesha.

Mary
