Police use unnecessary force after arrest initiated for jaywalkin
This is a pretty troubling police video down in Champaign, IL. A young man is stopped and arrested. The original offense seems to have been jaywalking. The man refuses, while in handcuffs to produce his I.D. Again, he is already in handcuffs, and is in the back of a police cruiser. Well, a little after 15 minutes into the video, he is attacked and choked by a police officer. It seems he was choked for refusing to give I.D. I wasn't a criminal justice major, but I am pretty sure refusing to give I.D. isn't justification towards being choked by a cop. I could be wrong about that. Well, he kind of did offer to give the cop his I.D. It's sort of confusing during this stop, but anyway, the officer does clearly use unnecessary force.
Oh by the way, the cop was very quick on the trigger with the pepper spray early in the arrest. Second, the young man was about to be charged with felony resisting a police officer while he was being choked, while handcuffed, in the backseat of a cruiser. Wow. If not for the video, the young man would have been imprisoned for at least a few years with a felony to his record. That's just a fact. The name of the officer isn't being released. No surprised, nobody is better protected in their identity when they abuse their authority, than the police.
