Pope Warns Italy in Danger of Returning to Fascism
An editorial in a popular Italian Catholic weekly, the paper condemned recent government moves against immigrants and Roma, saying they hoped fascism was 'not resufracing in our country under another guise'.
A day later, the Pope spoke out as well, expressing concern over racism and immigration issues. It has touched off a hotbed of discussion online and in the media, raising issues that have plagued the Italian government for years.
In his customary midday Sunday address, the pontiff expressed concern at "recent examples of racism" and reminded Catholics it was their duty to steer others in society away from "racism, intolerance and [the] exclusion [of others]".
On any other day, his remarks might have been seen as no more than a restatement of official Catholic doctrine. But they came instead in the midst of a furious dispute over an editorial published by Italy's bestselling Catholic weekly, Famiglia Cristiana.
Some comments from blogs, including a lot of bible verses:
The BBC (among others) is carrying a report today on some remarks by the Pope decrying racism -- an especially volatile topic in Italy at the moment. This paragraph caught my eye:
Taking his cue from an Old Testament passage about the duty of welcoming foreigners, the Pope said peace and justice could only be created in a world where every human person was respected.
The story doesn't mention which passage he used, nor has my online searching revealed an answer. But Lev. 19:33-34 would be one good candidate.
The Church would like us to take on any piece of human scum, regardless of the fact that they are criminals, illegals, violent or even more racist than we have become (see muslims, who often can't stand catholics although living in our countries).
The church also wants people not to abort, so that we get overpopulated. But it doesn't explain how should we feed all the people.
The Church, like all religions, is following a totally illogical and irrational path, that will lead basically nowhere.
The Church does not explain what should we do with the millions of illegal immigrants and with the fact that what they call RACISM is indeed a reaction to violences, crimes and unjust actions exceuted by immigrates.
Just as soon as the pope starts heaving out mass amounts of money to quell the violent and backward ways of some peoples actions I’ll start listening to what he has to say !
When you break into someones country and continue to break the law in the name of so called freedom and the government refuses to stop the lawbreaking charity is not what is needed but law abiding citizen action.
