It's Columbus Day: all public schools and public offices are closed. This means post offices. Post offices are closed on Columbus Day. They've always been closed on Columbus Day. They likely will continue to be closed on Columbus Day. So if you're mailing that last-minute credit card bill, it'll be late.

Sorry. I got the Post Office holiday schedule for 2009 below, though.

Meanwhile, the US Post Office website is choking on extra traffic (not that it ever works too well, but hey). Even when you eventually load the page, you'll find it useless, as the USPS does not have an easy-to-find list of its own closures.

I got your back, though:

  • Thursday, January 1 - New Year's Day
  • Monday, January 19 - Martin Luther King Jr's Birthday
  • Monday, February 16 - President's Day
  • Monday, May 25 - Memorial Day
  • Saturday, July 4 - Independence Day
  • Monday, September 7 - Labor Day
  • Monday, October 12 - Columbus Day
  • Wednesday, November 11 - Veterans Day
  • Thursday, November 26 - Thanksgiving Day
  • Friday, December 25 - Christmas Day (duh)
  • Friday, January 1, 2010 - New Year's Day

You can find the carefully-hidden closure schedule here.

so ....what is the problem with closing the USPS on Columbus Day? Responsible people that need to pay their bills will plan for the closure and mail items out earlier. Sounds like your just mad that you can't log onto the USPS website my friend and thanks for watching my back :)

After so  many tries I was able to get to the page that lists the postal holidays www.usps.com/communications/newsroom/calendar/federalholidays.htm Wish USPS does a better job of making their web site searchable.
