Pastor gunned down in Illinois church Posted: 02:38 PM ET

(CNN) — The pastor of a Maryville, Illinois, church was shot to death during a service Sunday in front of horrified parishoners who then tackled the gunman, state police said.

Fred Winters, the pastor of the First Baptist Church, was shot and killed during the 8 a.m. service, while his attacker and two parishoners suffered knife wounds, Illinois state police spokesman Ralph Timmins said.

The gunman walked in during the service and walked up to the pulpit, opening fire when he was met by Winters, Timmins said. The man’s .45-caliber pistol jammed after he shot Winters, and he pulled out a knife and turned it on himself before being tackled by some of the roughly 150 worshippers attending the church,
Timmins said.

Two of those who went after the attacker suffered non-life-threatening injuries, while the suspect’s injuries are “very serious,” Timmins said.

Thankfully in my Baptist Church we have 2 police officers who wear their guns under their suit coats during services. My heart goes out to the congregation and families at that church in Maryville IL

Why do you need officers in your church?  Why is this god of yours so incompetent?  Why is it incapable of protecting ANYONE, not even a preacher in the pulpit?

You idiot! Why wouldn't they need gun man. Pastors need protection. God does protects thoes who also help themselve. Some people aren't in their right state of mind. Do you know how many threats they can receive in a month. I support all the protection they need.

(Romans 2:5-11) 5But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. 6God "will give to each person according to what he has done."a]'>[a] 7To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. 8But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. 9There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; 10but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 11For God does not show favoritism."

i will let you make the decision i pray you make the right one and you the mouth GOD GAVE YOU to bless his name

Oh, please. Whoever still believes in comic book god, gods or goddesses raise your right hand and swear after me....

Partly, you ask a real question, though. It is a question of the covenant that all worshippers have with what and who they worship.

But that take is the most primitive magical take possible.

We really do have "free will" and have to encourage the civility and conscience of people. We may be born with a capacity for a conscience, but if not nourished and encouraged, it becomes insignificant drowned out by needs, associations, identities and pure ignorance and self-indulgence.

The worship of Higher Power is designed to help you find your center, your contact with your originator to allow you deal with strength when faced with life's exigencies.

Hey, and there may have been signs and warnings about the whole thing that the ignored.
