PREVIEW: YO1 Festival - Knavesmire, York, 5th May 2013
Circle Sunday the 5th of May on your calendar and then set the controls for the heart of the Knavesmire in York. For that is the time and place of the second annual YO1 festival. This year it has relocated to a new site and just like this huge expanse of undeveloped grassland which lies just to the south west of this ancient city and is home to York racecourse, this one day event promises to be even bigger and better in 2013.
Live music will be spread across five stages, from headliners Rudimental, AlunaGeorge, Jackmaster, Oneman and DJ Yoda on the main stage to Greymatter and Medlar on the Circulation Stage. But YO1 is not only about DJs and dance as a whole raft of other musical talent will populate the remaining three stages. Mark Wynn, Edwina Hayes and local heroes Alice Ostapjuk and Boss Caine (both pictured below) will tread the boards of the Bison Coffee Stage; Miaow Miaow, White Firs, PAWS and the Leeds-based Hookworms are amongst those appearing on the Please Please You Stage; whilst the Irie Vibes Stage features all things roots, reggae and dub, including the brothers Mikey Dread and Jah T and the roaring lion that is their Channel One Sound System.
Whilst there is undoubtedly a strong emphasis upon music – at the last count some 50 acts were already listed to perform, with yet more still to be announced – YO1 is also described as being a festival of street food and ales. Some of the best street food traders in the North of England will be on the Knavesmire on the 5th of May, alongside a micro ale festival promising a range of some 16 beers and ciders. In addition to all of this music, food and drink there will still be room for a vintage fair within the festival, as well as an assortment of theatrical performances, graffiti artists and soft play equipment for children and adults alike.
Come rain or shine it promises to be a thoroughly great day out and with an upper crowd limit of 2500 being placed on the event and prices pegged at just £20 for an Adult and a combined Adult and Teen ticket for £30 it will come as no little surprise to hear that tickets are flying out the door. So get in a bit sharpish and bag yours here:
