The Catholic Church has followed the beach goers in hopes of generating attendance by establishing an inflatable church complete with a beach convent.

The 30-metre (98 ft) long blow-up church -- staffed by priests ready to take confession -- will debut on Saturday on the Adriatic coast in the Molise region, an organizer said.

"There will be four or five people singing, with music about God," said Chiara Facci with Catholic group Sentinelli del Mattino. Night time activities, which will not include Mass, will run from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The first attempt to inaugurate the inflatable church last month on the holiday island of Sardinia failed after strong winds forced organizers to relocate, she said.

Big cities like Rome and Milan empty in August, when Italians head to the beach for summer holidays, leaving streets empty and many businesses closed. Churches are hardly immune, and also see their congregations thin.

Do you think this will work?

This church was inflated at Bestival, a music festival on the Isle of Wight, UK. When we visited there was a wedding, with guest of honour Suggs from the band Madness.

This church was at the Electric Picnic festival in Ireland near Portloise. I'm not sure if there was anyone who had actually been ordained attending but it seemed to be an entertaining curio for the festival goers.

This was the Inflatable Church at Ireland's Electric Picnic in 2006 where they performed marriage ceremonies, mostly in fancy dress it has to be said, and I'm quite sure none of them were legal. Kelly Osbourne allegedly got married in there during the festival that year.

It was set up next to the infamous Silent Disco - a great laugh at any festival.
