Prince William, second in line for the British throne, is engaged to longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton. The engagement was announced through traditional media channels, but a tweet from Prince Charles caught popular attention first.

Prince William gave Kate Middleton his mother's engagement ring.

The gossip magazines have been drumming up this story for years, though it hasn't quite caught fire in the US as expected. Kate Middleton has a fondness for bikinis, which has kept the paparazzi busy (Kate Middleton bikini photo), and Prince William bears more than a passing resemblance to his mother, Princess Diana.

When is the Kate Middleton-Prince William Wedding?

No date has been announced for the wedding of Kate Middleton and Prince William, but we know that it will be during the spring or summer of 2011.

Why hasn't this been a bigger story for longer outside the UK? Maybe the recession is keeping the US distant from the royal storyline: it seems so fantastical when put against a world of unemployment and foreclosures. Not that the UK is immune, either, as many young people are faced with the prospect of unattainable higher education.
