NP Rank:
A Proud Heritage Comes Alive
In the film Glory (1984), movie goers learned about the 54th Massachusetts, a regiment of back soldiers which fought at the Battle of Fort Wagner. What is little known by the general public is that over 209,000 African American soldiers and sailors served in the American Civil War. They served in 166 regiments and fought in 446 engagements, 36 major battles that would determine the outcome of the war. Among them were the 6th Regiment U.S.C.T., which assembled at Camp William Penn in mid-to-late 1863 and began their duty at Yorktown, New York. The 6th Regiment would go on to serve heroically throughout Virginia and North Carolina until September 20, 1865.
October 25th, as apart of the Living History Days at the New York Historical Society, the 6th Regiment United States Colored Troops Reenactors will portray the regiment program at NYHS. Visitors can learn first hand about these true freedom fighters and reclaim this proud heritage.
