Puerto Rico Day Parade 2009: Photos & Video
The 2009 National Puerto Rican Day Parade, one of the largest parades in the US, took place in New York today.
Nearly one million New Yorkers have roots in Puerto Rico, a US territory that locals call Borinquen. New York's Boricua community came out in force to celebrate their Puerto Rican heritage.
The Puerto Rico Day Parade is the culmination of two weeks of events revolving around Puerto Rican music and culture. Those events inculded gala balls, music festivals in Brooklyn, and beauty contests. During the parade, the streets were filled with the sounds of salsa and reggaeton, not to mention plenty of colorful floats.
This year's Parade King was salsa musician Victor Manuelle.
For many, this year's parade was given extra meaning by the recent nomination of New York-born Puerto Rican Sonia Sotomayor to the US Supreme Court.
