Rebecca Black: 'Friday' Singer Upset by Global Dissing
Rebecca Black: Friday Becomes A Global Train-Wreck Sensation
You've heard Rebecca Black's "Friday" by now. If you think you haven't, it's only because your brain blocked to memory to preserve your fragile sanity. The saccharine-sweet "Friday" is an autotuned disaster that will leave you wondering if it's a joke. It's not.
Several Rebecca Black "Friday" covers, parodies, remixes and mashups (unauthorized, of course) have sprung up, and they're included in the video player below, along with (and I'm sorry for this) the original. Oh, and "Friday" is currently in the top 10 downloads on the iTunes music store.
Rebecca Black: Only Human
Despite what you may gather from "Friday"'s production values, Rebecca Black is not actually a robot. She is a 13-year-old human, and she wants you to know that she has feelings.
“Those hurtful comments really shocked me,” Black said yesterday in her first interview since the song came to dominate a certain quadrant of popular culture and crack the iTunes Top 100 singles chart this week, besting the likes of Bruno Mars and Justin Bieber. “At times, it feels like I’m being cyberbullied.”
Rebecca Black was developed/manufactured by Ark Music Factory, which has an army of similar tween singers just waiting to attack. Creepily, Ark Music Factory targets young teens. In terms of exploitation media, who is being exploited here? Audience Performer? Both? This is up there with K-Tel's Mini Pop Kids.
Help us, Nina Simone... you're our only hope.
Rebecca Black: Some 'Friday' Lyrics
7am, waking up in the morning
Gotta be fresh, gotta go downstairs
Gotta have my bowl, gotta have cereal
Seein’ everything, the time is goin’
Tickin’ on and on, everybody’s rushin’
Gotta get down to the bus stop
Gotta catch my bus, I see my friends
Kickin’ in the front seat
Sittin’ in the back seat
Gotta make my mind up
Which seat can I take?
Partyin’, partyin’
Partyin’, partyin’
Fun, fun, fun, fun
Lookin’ forward to the weekend
7:45, we’re drivin’ on the highway
Cruisin’ so fast, I want time to fly
Fun, fun, think about fun
You know what it is
I got this, you got this
My friend is by my right
I got this, you got this
Now you know it
Kickin’ in the front seat
Sittin’ in the back seat
Gotta make my mind up
Which seat can I take?
(Check Direct Lyrics for the full lyrics, but you get the idea)
Cody Brotter describes it best: "It's Bieber Fever. It's McDonalds. It's The Jersey Shore and Hummers and Miley on salvia."
