NP Rank:
Red Dawn, and the absurd premise of N. Korea invading the U.S.
When I was a kid I went to see the 1984 movie, Red Dawn at a drive-in. I was still naive enough at the time to believe that the Soviets could invade the U.S., as the film shows. Heck, the Soviets might not even have had a navy that could have invaded Canada. But, at least that was somewhat plausible. I mean, it could have happened. Probably wouldn't, but possible. The new Red Dawn has the North Koreans invading us. Yes, the North Koreans.
The North Koreans who if they tried to invade South Korea, just next door, would probably see their military wrecked in almost no time at all. Originally the movie was a bit more plausible with the nation invading us being China. But, the film maker didn't want to piss off the giant Chinese market. Or have the film banned there.
Unfortunately though, there are still Americans who believe in such absurdities. The strange thing I have found about much of the far right-wing, is that even though we have and will continue to have throughout the Obama Adminstration the most powerful and expensive military on the face of the earth, they are paranoid that every nation from China to North Korea to Monaco is going to invade us and enslave us in some way.
Of course, such beliefs are great to military contractors. The more paranoria, the more aircraft carriers sold to the U.S. government. To you and me. President Eisenhower, who was the Supreme Allied Commander in WWII in Europe, warned us when leaving office of the "military industrial complex". That being of course the generals who want heavy spending along with the military contractors happy to provide it to the politicans willing to vote for it for campaign contributations by the contractors. How right he was. There should be a movie made about that.
