The website LegendsOfBeer.com has compiled an interesting report on the extent of product placement in major motion pictues involving beer. The research shows that Budweiser is the beer brand most likely to crop up in a summer blockbuster, although most of the major commercial breweries have used their marketing budget to find their way onto movie screens.

The nature of movie product placements has evolved over the years. For example, take The Deer Hunter, starring Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep. In retrospect, it features a very blatant promotional line for Rolling Rock beer, with De Niro calling it "a good beer, it's the best around". This form of product placement may seem a little crude and blunt, but at least it's honest. Nowadays, we are treated to extravagant close-ups of beer bottles (The Island) or long, lingering camerawork over a well-lit beer brand (Spider-Man), which is visually jarring and almost makes you wonder if the movie has paused for a brief commercial.

The practice of product placement is clearly here to stay, but surely it can be executed in a subtle, fitting manner? If not, then it's only fair that we condemn the worst offenders to a Hall of Shame for their crimes agains movie-making.
