REVIEW: Buried Starring Ryan Reynolds
Ryan Reynolds REALLY wants to be taken seriously as an actor. Van Wilder was almost a decade ago. That man is gone. In his place is a good-looking guy who's in great shape and married to Scarlett Johansson. If you had any doubts about the new Ryan Reynolds then you no longer will after having watched Buried.
It's 90 minutes of Reynolds buried alive in Iraq. He plays a truck driver who is working for the re-construction program, but the company that hired him did provide enough protection and he gets kidnapped only 9 months into the job. He is locked into a wooden coffin and given a cellphone that he must use to contact the U.S. and plead them to pay the ransom or else he'll be left to die.
Buried is completely performance-driven. It's like watching a play, so it's not a film for everyone. But if you're willing to give it a chance you'll be very impressed by it. Reynolds proves that he can act and might even be nominated for an Academy Award. Then again, James Franco is playing a guy who gets trapped by a boulder in Danny Boyle's 127 Hours, so he might spoil all of Reynolds' fun. If that happens the atleast Reynolds' can go home to his mansion, have sex with Scarlett Johansson, and then brag to Franco about it. It's a win-win, really.
