Non-comic book readers may remember Jonah Hex from the episode of Batman: The Animated Series with Ra's Al Ghul telling one of his tales from the wild west. Well, this movie wishes it were as good as that episode. Jonah Hex had potential if it wasn't so by-the-numbers. The plot consists of the title character (Josh Brolin) getting revenge for the death of his family. That's pretty much the plot for every other spaghetti western. And a spaghetti western is what this flick was trying to be. The hero is Clint Eastwood-esque with weapons that rival those of Django. Fans of the genre will enjoy many moments, but it's difficult to like the entire film when half way through it turns into Wild Wild West. Like the 1999 flop starring Will Smith it tries too hard to appeal to modern audiences with Michael Bay-inspired explosions. The genre is too niche these days. If the filmmakers had made a proper western and released it in the Fall like 3:10 to Yuma did then it could have been a cult hit.
